Happy New Car day
(Spoiler: not a Porsche)
First Electric BMW 5 Series.
Plenty quick enough
Range in the real world - 300 miles
A shit ton of tech’
Very comfortable and nice to drive (in the 40 miles I’ve done today )
The general consensus online was to not go for the M60 version- it’s too uncomfortable and the extra money doesn’t really stack up. So I went for a top of the range of the basic one if that makes sense
The last pic is me watching a video about the Diavel X

I loved my two 5 series
But they used death causing fossil fuels, not Duracells - the 530d Msport was an epic long distance motor

Shadow line trim around the windows, but still a chrome grille.

Re: Happy New Car day
What about people doing not so good and buying crap things for themselves? Does that make you sad?
Cracking motor dude it’s a belter, can’t beat having all the tech, when it’s such a lovely place to be you enjoy the drive so much more.

Didn't you get the memo? Apparently people who buy EVs all hate em and go back to ICE.

Very gangster, congrats!
Bit of a no-brainer for within the M25 and if not a high miles driver.

Every EV owner I know has, although one to a hybrid. My neighbour has just got a iPace but kept his diesel Rangey for now.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 8:02 am Didn't you get the memo? Apparently people who buy EVs all hate em and go back to ICE.

Re: Happy New Car day
The point about having a nice place to be is bang on and ultimately what won me over. There are better EVs (Kia do a couple I nearly got, including the EV9) but I feel like that cat that got the cream sat in this.
As for EV to ICE? Not me. My charging bill for a year was less than £100. A year. The Volvo I had before this convinced me I was EV from here on, so I'll always have one.
I can't wave my Greenpeace flag too vigorously- still have the Landy and the Panda, but it's all good. Annual mileage is typically 10k

Every EV owner I know is converted and won't go back Though some also have something ICE still, usually for fun.Taipan wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 8:34 amEvery EV owner I know has, although one to a hybrid. Re: Happy New Car day
It's the other way round for people I know... if they have ICE as well as EV (and not all do), then the ICE is something fun and sporty for little weekend trips. The EV is what does all the longer journeys.
It's one of those areas of EVs that is, to me, the least well understood. Everyone is obsessed by range, and while it's obviously a huge consideration, it's not the problem most people seem to think it is in the real world. I mean, if you're regularly doing 300+ miles per day and aren't able to stop for 20 minutes then EVs probably aren't for you, but I've never met such a person!
But anyway, congrats @Docca
Re: Happy New Car day
I find the whole issue very interesting, but I'd suggest leaving Docca to enjoy his new car and move any discussion/friendly arguments about the pros and cons to the other thread designed for just such a discussion.Potter wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 9:52 amHow many are you talking about here?
I don't know every one obviously but I do have the stats for a group of companies with 100k+ employees and EV chargers are not the issue that was expected, because despite an early flurry most went back to ICE.
And sales of EVs, if you believe the news and mags, have really not achieved what was expected, in fact it's speculated that it could sink some big brands.

Just start a new 'Generic nice car discussion' thread

Is that because it's EV or because it's a BMW and the perceived quality/prestige?
I remember getting my M3 and driving down the road being super happy because it felt like such a great place to be, there was a feeling of occasion about it. Same when I got my first Porsche, etc.
So no- I wasn’t drawn to the BMW badge. That kind of thing has never really worked for me ( you should see my clothes )
I had a Volvo before. XC40 full EV. Decided on that because it’s a great drive and was fully Google ( voice activation for loads). Owned that car for 3 years and nothing really went wrong.
I tried the Merc’ EQE, EQB, Kia EV6, EV9, Audi something or other ,Polestar 4 (I think), Jaguar iPace, and one or two others.
I’m also rather boring when it comes to buying stuff and get a huge sense of pleasure researching; YouTube videos, magazine reviews and so on.
Kids going off to college/Uni meant I didn’t need a people carrier. Landy means I have something to take the dogs in.
So this was just for me/wife. It’s ‘won’ pretty much every single road test against others in its class for comfort, overall drive etc.
The Merc was similar from a cockpit perspective (I think the bendy screens were a merc idea) but this car, and perhaps because it’s the first electric 5 series, feels special.
I’ll bore people with some interior pics later.
As for EV and use vs ICE. My landy needed £13k throwing at it last year and will probably need another £1k this week. The Fiat panda is a new head gasket.
Never had an issue with range for EV- I guess it depends on where you live, but that argument is fairly redundant nowadays.
The EV will be day to day (as it’s been for years), the Landy for dog walks and when we need to take small armies of people places. The panda is what my eldest has commandeered.
I’m driving down to Provence in two weeks. I’ll be going via Switzerland and Italy. All in the EV.

Re: Happy New Car day
Yeah lol- it’s the landy. If there is no oil under it, there is no oil in it etc
EV on right side of drive now as that’s where the charger is
