Lolz

Who cares what they've called it, it's only a car. See also Beetle, MINI, 500 and probably loads more. How much of each model of Transit have in common with the previous one as an example. Granted some are merely facelifts, but a mk7 compared to a mk1?
At least a Transit has always been a van.

The Capri has been various things over the years - but generally it was a somewhat sporty 2-door coupe, not a grossly resource wasting SUV.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Capr ... biguation)
Exactly. Re-using a name for something that attempts to recreate the spirit of a previous model is very different from using it for something that it's almost the opposite of.

Though yes, it *is* only a car, so nobody (hopefully) is getting genuinely upset by this, least of all me :)

Like film sequels any car that revives a nostalgic name is likely to be a bit naff, every one I've looked into has been a disappointment and now I don't bother looking.

Don't know if it's the same for everyone else, but on my machine this link ^ is shortened to "Ford Capri....biguation" which seems kinda fitting.

Just another car that has some name, some metric or design feature(s) to prompt discussion that they hope will promote desire in someone enough that they give a chunk of money for one. Just like every other car. Just like everything you can buy that's being marketed to you to satisfy your desires and/or make you feel better generally or just better than someone else.

But the car is gopping and I'd rather walk.

Surely the only reason they called it the Capri is to appeal to the old guffers who still have nostalgia for the name. Then they go an instantly piss them off by making it a chunky SUV (it's got 4 doors FFS!). I don't understand the thinking.

Call it a Sierra, a Cortina, or even and Escort. Why pick Capri when it's the antitheses of the original.

Exactly.

It's like when chavs put fake 'M' badges on their 320D... the only people who'd understand the significance of the badge will immediately know that it's fake, and nobody else would care. I never understand that.

Sierra or Cortina would actually be quite cool... bringing back an old name for a modern equivalent.

But M-Sport is a trim level these days, they probably came from the factory with M badges.

My wife's new 2l diesel BMW has M-Sport branded wheels, seats and steering wheel, along with the external M badges.

I say that to Mrs D all the time. She's bored of it now, but she's bored of a lot of things I say. I try not to worry about it.

Back in the day, Ford knew their target market and named their cars after wank-mags, like Fiesta or Escort.

It's wokery gone mad, these days. ;)

I did some training at work the other day delivered by the mothership. They were talking about technical compliance and certification, one thing they covered was how they control/certify new things which don't have any legislature around them yet.

The example they used was a dashboard mounted selfie cam.

So I'd say OEMs still know their market

True. But there are still people that stick a fake ones on the back where they would only go on an 'M' car.

They need to get with the times... The Ford Pornhub.

I like it. It's got a kind of jacuzzi-in-the-back-of-a-limo vibe. Good for a people carrier.

I grew up around Capris, my uncles both drove 3-Litre S's, I had 4 of the bloody things myself, but that new car doesn't bother me at all, because the Capri, in hindsight, was an agricultural rustbucket that was actually inferior in every way to the Manta apart from straight line speed.

I was more annoyed by Fiat bringing out the "new" Panda, at the time I was driving a 750L original and to me that was the real deal.

So as an old duffer former Capri driver, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
