New Ford Capri
New Ford Capri
Here's a question for the group....
Ford have just launched their new electric SUV... which they've called the Capri. It's exactly the same as the original Capri, in that they're both cars and both say 'Capri' on them.
Now, I went with a group of other petrol heads to Goodwood FOS last week where it was being launched/displayed. Full disclosure: we're all around 50, all have a solid history of silly cars, one has even owned three Capris back in the day, but we're all also not against EVs: 3 of the 4 currently have one in the household, so we're very open to anything on four (or 3 or 2) wheels. We all spent a significant amount of time cooing over the new EV Renault 5, for instance, and the only one of the group who doesn't currently own an EV put a deposit down for one when he got home!
But we didn't even bother looking at the Capri at all because all of us disliked it out of principle for reusing the name. I mean, I never even liked Capris, but I share the same view... we didn't plan not to look at it, we just showed no interest, didn't bother walking over to it, and spent a while discussing how stupid it was to call it that.
So, the question... is that just us? Are we just miserable old fogeys now? Do you think it's clever marketing, as Ford clearly do? They have form too, with their previous EV SUV being called the 'Mustang.'
Interested to hear what maybe younger people or less-petrolheady types think. Does it make you angry or make you want to buy one?

Re: New Ford Capri
It seems pointless to me unless the new one in a decent was mimics the original one. This clearly does not do that. Things like a Mustang at last looks like a Mustang so i can get that... but that Capri looks 0% like an older Capri.
But i honestly couldn't care what they name them, they're not on my radar either way.

Re: New Ford Capri
Not sure the Mustang looks like a Mustang... for clarity, they do make a current petrol Mustang as well (below, left), but the EV is very much an SUV.weeksy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 10:12 am It seems pointless to me unless the new one in a decent was mimics the original one. But yes, I have no problem with modern interpretations re-using the old names... like the Renault 5, Fiat 500, Mini, etc etc etc. But just gluing a badge onto to something completely unrelated seems pointless and cynical to me.

Re: New Ford Capri
It seems a utterly incomprehensible move to me.
The new one might be a very good car, it might be rubbish, it might be something in between. I have no idea. But by coupling it to an iconic name you've immediately saddled it with a load of expectation and baggage which means it's never gonna be judged on it's merits.
I can't imagine anyone who really knows about or likes the original Capri is going to want an electric SUV or vice versa.
Yes BTW, you're all miserable old fogeys also.

Re: New Ford Capri
It's amazing to me how two cars which look so similar can be so different. The Polestar looks pretty good to me, the Capri looks blobby and anonymous.
Re: New Ford Capri
I agree with everything else you say, but I wouldn't go this far... I mean, the one mate I know who owned 3 Capris now has an electric SUV (Model Y)!Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 10:34 am I can't imagine anyone who really knows about or likes the original Capri is going to want an electric SUV or vice versa.
You get old, you have kids, you get solar panels, things change But he certainly wouldn't buy an electric SUV called a Capri, no.

I can't imagine anyone who really knows about or likes the original Capri is going to want an electric SUV because it's called a Capri.
Re: New Ford Capri
BTW, this is how you do an EV reboot, IMHO.
You could barely get near this thing at Goodwood as there were people queuing to have a sit in it. Small, cool and with enough DNA to justify the name.

Have you seen the Alpine based on the same platform?

Re: New Ford Capri
In fairness, the original Capri looked nothing like a Mediterranean island.

Re: New Ford Capri
I was going to say that Capri was an island long before it was the name of a car but basically beaten at the internetz.

Re: New Ford Capri
The new Mini looks a bit like a classic Mini and the new Fiat 500 looks a bit like a classic Fiat 500, and they've been pretty successful. So you can understand further manufacturer reboots. But this new Capri looks feck all like the original and I dunno if I'd have picked a Capri to reboot anyway - they were cool in a "this is a bit shit but we'll put up with it" way really?

Re: New Ford Capri
Yep. They had those at Goodwood too. Equally cool, but nice to know there'll be a basic, relatively affordable Renault-branded one that looks just as good.

Re: New Ford Capri
It's pants.
Lolz
Who cares what they've called it, it's only a car. See also Beetle, MINI, 500 and probably loads more. How much of each model of Transit have in common with the previous one as an example. Granted some are merely facelifts, but a mk7 compared to a mk1?

At least a Transit has always been a van.cheb wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 12:09 pm It's pants.

The Capri has been various things over the years - but generally it was a somewhat sporty 2-door coupe, not a grossly resource wasting SUV.
