Re: Who Will You Vote For?
I take a philosophical view. When the UK finally collapses we shall man the bridges over the Tamar and declare UDI in Cornwall. Illegal imigrants will be interterred in New Roskear shaft in Dulcoath mine, they may get damp, the water is about 300 fathoms deep Tourists will be welcome, but taxed.

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
To use your analogy, my guess is that Starmer will be a steady no flash hand on the tiller while the boat sinks under him.porter_jamie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 6:17 pm I remember when brown was voted out they said the next government will only get one term as the austerity will be so bad no one will vote for them again for decades
Cameron won an outright majority the next election ffs. And the Tories are still there. And then when the stupid grandad was about to be in change of labour, Tory supporters were joining labour for a fiver to vote for corbyn thereby guaranteeing labour wouldn't be voted in again for a generation. And then of course Boris won a stonking majority and everyone agreed he will be in power for at least 2 terms if not more. And now it's a shoe in for labour. So it's all bullshit. People are saying labour in for a decade. Really though? Anything could happen. Starmer isn't a TV Tony Blair kinda guy but I'm hoping he will be a steady no flash hand on the tiller in a boring John major kind of way. JM was bodging Edwina though so who In the cabinet is Sir Kier most likely to bodge on the cabinet conference table? This is the kind of political intrigue that could hold my interest z the current situation is boring the tits off me.

This is literally the best part of being an expat though. You have nothing that is somehow owed to you because of a peculiarity of your birth location. Every benefit seems like a lovely gift rather than is something to be pulled to shreds and grudgingly accepted. The natives roll their eyes in sympathy with you because your country is nearly always in a shittier mess than theirs. It's great.

It's feckiin expensive already to go on holiday there. Be wary about making it more so.
Otherwise the local economy will have to rely on its other main industries. Tin and china clay, aren't they?

Natives speak a language other than English? Check
Have to travel over water to get here? Check
I think that's me qualified as an ex-pat.

And lithium, don't forget the lithium.
As a matter of interest tin, copper, arsenic, iron, tungsten, silver, gold and china clay have all been mined in Cornwall.
