No it is not. It is a direct result of inept negotiations by the British Government. We could, and should, have insisted that we were falling back on standard international law, and anyone fishing in our waters would be arrested and fined.

You don't need one until 2025 and it will be €7. (A UK ETA application costs £10).

It is unlikely that you will be allowed to travel to Europe with a serious criminal record. Anyone who has spent more than 3 years in jail or has been convicted of trafficking or drug offences with over two years of jail time will usually be declined
On the plus side, there'll be lots more space on the Costa del Sol beaches.

:D

(UK ETA requirements are pretty much the same - no convicted crims - of course, if you're a British passport-holding crim you don't need an ETA to get back in....sadly  ).

Just has a look at the UK's ETA website, its entry requirements seem a little over the top :eh:
A mandatory refusal also applies to applicants who have received a non-custodial sentence less than a year before applying for the UK ETA. These non-custodial sentences may be for driving offences, civil orders, non-payment of fines and other minor offences.

It's been in most newspapers / news sites for a while.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/arti ... -2024.html

https://www.thetimes.com/travel/advice/ ... -nhgc5vxmq

Can't say it's been kept quiet, are you a member of a trade association?

As it's an entry requirement I would imagine that airlines will make it a requirement before boarding much like they do now with the passenger info requirement as they won't want to have to fly people home due to not being allowed in.

Same as when you travel to the US - you have to have the ESTA before you can check in IIRC.

I didn't actually know about the ETIAS thing (or I'd forgotten, I don't remember which  ) and I work for a German company and travel to the EU all the time. Might check my colleagues know :obscene-birdiedoublered:

I'm probably being hopelessly optimistic but I assume these systems will be built to common standards and will interface easily.
There'll be an international standard for this. In fact, just to be on the safe side, there'll be several so countries can choose whichever they like best. Choice is good, right?

As my job is in tourism, specifically transferring tourists from and to the airports, I'm dreading this. Just how many people will have to change their flights/holidays etc. How many will message to say they won't be turning up and can they have a refund?

....
If you're worried, why don't you remind your customers when they make the booking that they need an ETIAS? And don't confirm the booking until they confirm they have an ETIAS.
I work in tourism, I don't have a business, so I am not in charge of any websites etc. I can and will remind our office that we need to add a note to the booking form/confirmation/etc - but it's not my decision.

What I said was that I am surprised that, while working in a tourist area with brits, I have not heard anybody talk about this and so fully expect that very few people are aware/have remembered

So start thinking about it in December for any holidays booked in January!

As above, I don't have a company, but I haven't heard or read any of the local companies (run by and for brits) mention any of this. I would have fully expected it to be talked about a LOT as it's only 6 months till the winter season starts and a little under 7 months until the ETIAS is needed

I've not seen anything shared online in any of the places I see news (I don't use actual news sites TBF) but the links are from, Oct 2023 - Feb 2024 - Feb 2023 - Nov 2023, not exactly current.

So, not much info as it gets closer - of course the election is happening, so no one will mention it for a while

Hopefully. I've messaged all the people I know with chalet companies to mention it and see if they did know!

TBF, this isn't a Brexit post but of course it will be dragged down that route. I didn't mention it in the OP quite deliberately. It's a change in travel regs and a LOT of Brits travel for holidays. So the fact that it isn't on the radar of people who live in a European tourist area worried me.

If the thread is going to go down the Brexit route, I'll leave you to it. I posted in politics because I didn't think it was general, but maybe I should have put it there as an 'info post' - mind you, it would have had all the same Brexit posts so would have been moved here anyway

I am sure it will be simple - unless people turn up to fly that didn't know they needed it :( :(

Sadly far more idiots fly to Europe - closer innit. You'd probably be surprised at how many people didn't realise that it wasn't allowed to fly using a passport with less than 6 months validity anymore.

I'm pretty sure that for the Schengen area you need at least 3 months validity left on your passport, not 6. Some countries do require at least 6 months left, but not (generally) in Europe. At least, that's what this website reckons:

TBF I couldn't remember the exact length of time. Just remember a lot of people needing a second transfer for a member/s of family who had to go to the passport office to get a new one and get another flight (or, they ended up just cancelling one person or the whole trip)!!

It depends when the passport was issued. Its possible to renew a UK passport six months before it expires, the new passport will have a validity of ten years and six months. There's a regular supply of news stories where people have been turned away because they think there's six months left on a passport when in fact it's over the ten year validity period.

That's probably where I got the six months from as I remember one story of exactly that!

TBF, I've been lectured about the lotto idiot tax often (cos I do try to do the euro if I can) - but usually the lecture comes from someone with a fag in one hand and a pint in the other whilst I'm drinking lemonade or water!!

So I figure you can add alcohol and tobacco to the idiot tax?!!
