ETIAS needed for visits to the EU

Post by Noggin »

For the first time ever I'm dreading winter. Ok, December should be fine, but from 1st January 2025 UK passport holders will require the same sort of 'visa' paperwork that we all need to go to the States. Not a challenge to get, but I suspect it will be a challenge to make sure that all travellers actually KNOW it's necessary (given how many people missed flights the last couple of winters due to not knowing that you passport has to have a minimum of (I think) six months validity or you can't use it to fly to Europe) - and, TBF, I only found out about this over the weekend!!

As my job is in tourism, specifically transferring tourists from and to the airports, I'm dreading this. Just how many people will have to change their flights/holidays etc. How many will message to say they won't be turning up and can they have a refund?

I do so bloody hope I'm wrong and everything will go smoothly!!

Do British citizens need a visa for Europe?
British citizens do not need a visa to travel to Europe short term. Passport holders can continue to travel to countries in the EU without applying for a visa, even following Brexit.

  • Like nationals of all other visa-exempt non-EU countries, British citizens will need to apply for ETIAS from 2025. Registering with the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is mandatory to cross the external Schengen border.

Why do British citizens need ETIAS?
British citizens need ETIAS because the United Kingdom is not in the European Union. Since Brexit, you do not have freedom of movement in the EU as a UK passport holder.

ETIAS is being introduced for all visa-exempt non-EU nationals and therefore applies to travellers from the UK.

Citizens of over 60 countries including Australia, Canada, and the United States will also need to apply for ETIAS.

What you need to know about ETIAS for UK citizens
With the introduction of ETIAS, the requirements to travel from the UK to Europe will change. You will need ETIAS for holidays and business trips to Schengen countries.

Here is the essential information about ETIAS for UK citizens.

You can stay in Europe for up to 90 days per 180-day period with ETIAS. A visa is required for longer stays.
You can visit Europe multiple times with the same authorisation. You do not need to apply and pay each time you travel—ETIAS is valid for 3 years, or until your passport expires.
You can go to any of the countries in the Schengen Area with the same ETIAS permit. No need to get separate authorisations for each country you plan to visit.

I've not heard about it from any of the chalet company owners or workers that I know. You'd have thought they'd have been talking about it last winter a lot in preparation for it being needed!!

I don't remember much about what was going on with the negotiations (except losing some friends but also being a bit stressed in my own life too!) so can't say I remember this - but then it doesn't really apply to me cos I'm resident here and have an EU passport.

BUT - I'm gobsmacked that I've not read or heard anything about it in the last couple of years, given that I work in an industry that has soooo many uk tourists!!

Getting a visa waver for the US is no big deal*, getting one for the EU should be just as easy. And the foolish who don't know about it will soon learn.

*Unless of course you have a string of convictions.

My employer (British) owns approx 30 residential properties in the area which she rents out. She constantly has enquiries about rentals, mostly from Brits currently living in the UK or Turkey. These enquiries tend to be along the lines of 'What's the cost of living? Can I bring my UK car? Can I bring my dog/cat? Should I ship my furniture or buy some when there?
etc, etc,etc
Her first response is always 'Have you got a D-Visa?'
'What's that?'
She only has 2 tenants (a couple) who've managed to get residency via the D-Visa. Whereas I only have to re-apply for residency every 10
years, they have to do it every year and it costs them 550 lev per year, compared to my 35 lev for the full 10 years. And they're absolutely livid about it, which is hilarious given that they voted for Brexit
They're typical ignorant Brexit-voting expats who think their 40 fags and 3 litres of beer a day are all that keeps the BG economy ticking over, therefore they should be treated differently to every other non-EU national.

I know it isn't difficult for the States and fully expect it to be simple for the EU

The issue to me is - if someone that works in tourism (albeit this side of the channel but with a lot of uk tourists) had no idea, it's not exactly been 'put out there' to help tourists has it? Not one person in the vehicles I was driving last season mentioned this!!

As with the 'short expiry date' passports, I fully expect the media to blame anyone but the uk government. But someone/some department in the UK really should be making this very clear and very loudly to prevent a shit show of travel post 1st Jan. But of course they won't even start that until after the election

I wouldn't hold out too much hope, vast numbers of people who fly don't seem to understand, IME anyway, that metal items set off airport security metal detectors

If you're worried, why don't you remind your customers when they make the booking that they need an ETIAS? And don't confirm the booking until they confirm they have an ETIAS.

I imagine that will put some off; and make her business less viable and more clunky.

Still, we have all the fish. And immigration tekken control back off of. And a well funded NHS delivering easy accessed services in a timely fashion. And the fish, did I mention the fish? I imagine we're all enjoying the fish.

If it puts off the people who haven't got and can't be arsed to get an ETIAS and would demand a refund, then that's a GOOD THING, innit?

Irrelevant? I'd say no. It's a direct result of what people voted for.

'Hello? Police? My house has been burgled, they've stolen all my cash, credit cards, emptied my bank account and taken my phone, laptops and the family silver'.

'Are they still on the premises?'

'No'

'Ah well sir, it's done and dusted then so, move on'.

So…. ETIAS. How do you get one, how much, and how long will it take to come through? And will we be ready when we need to be, what with everything else….?

The UK ETA is currently being rolled out. I wonder if, eventually, an ETA issued by any country with linked systems will be valid in all those countries. I'm probably being hopelessly optimistic but I assume these systems will be built to common standards and will interface easily.

I imagine, one day, this sort of thing will replace paper passports. (All you need to get an ETA appears to be a passport, a photo and an email address).
