Oh, and a PS. I find the small (about 2" long) Victorinox SAKs really useful. They come in numerous configs - the one in my hand has a blade, nail file/screwdriver, scissors, biro and a tiny 'torch'. Another has no biro or torch but has tweezers and toothpick.

They really are pocket sized.

PPS there was a letter in one of the weekly things I read recently where an ex-police chap detailed the damage a scrote armed with an SAK did to him and a female colleague. They may not lock but there are ways of compensating for that...he somehow arranged it so the blade was between his fingers and basically punched the blade into them several times. He was lucky to be alive and she got a couple of bad wounds.

If that's the case a little Gerber folding knife would do the job. Mine's always coming in handy. They're not expensive.

Mine's this but with a little serrated section.

I suspect that that is all I need. I just wondered if I 'should' have more!! It's not my bike, so I am not changing storage stuff for make space for a little kit of tools (which I've had on most of my other bikes) - my mate seems to keep loads of stuff under the pillion seat, along with the Ohlins thingy for the rear shock!! LOL So not much space for a kit of anything :(

Thing is, it's a one job tool. I have a load of those types of thing but they take up space for just one job (I'm hoping to be securing my phone with cable ties again!! LOL).

TBF, I'm used to using knives (of various sorts) for things they aren't designed for - bit like using a stiletto heeled shoe as a hammer :angelic-green: :angelic-green:

I won't have room for a whole load of little tools - hence asking about multi tool thingies

You can do the same damage with a yale key. Anything can be a weapon. Guns don't kill people rappers do.

Fairy snuff but the problem with multi tools is most of them have pliers with a cutter down in the jaws of the pliers and that's no use for cutting cable ties that are done up tight - it's back to the blade. If you're just making a loose loop for security it's not really a problem, but if you're doing 'em up tight....there's a risk of cutting/scratching what they tightened onto.

PPS On SAKs again...I dunno if they're the same now but the corkscrew on one of mine is nearly as good as a 'Waiters Friend'.

Then again I can tell you shite you would not believe, and get corroberation with people who were there. I am a shit magnet.
I had a single spanner taken off me at an airport ("you might try to undo something sir.") :D Also a fairly crappy Laguiole copy (my bad, forgot it was in there). And another time some zip ties required consultation before they let me pass.

I get knife crime is a thing some places but I don't really fit the bill of age, ethnicity or locale so it's never really worried me. But when I was younger folk asked me for drugs all the time and everywhere so I must fit some kind of typecast.

Funniest one getting on an aircraft for me was when me and a couple of workmates decided to do the Heathrow - Gatwick - Heathrow helicopter shuttle that they ran for a while (1978 - 86). Just for a jolly as none of us had been on one. On frisking one of the others* they found a toy black plastic gun in his jacket pocket - he'd been playing cops n' robbers with his son and forgot about it

They weren't the slightest bit alarmed, laughed a bit at his embarrassment....and let him on board with it. :D

When we flew out of Nepal, they checked our backpacks. I had 2 kukhris in mine. They said I couldn't take them on. They were going in the hold, but had to argue the toss to persuade them that the knives wouldn't be a danger under the plane :D

I've carried a couple of shooters on a plane from Italy to France. A few times.

Pre 9/11 and old guns with the firing pins sent off seperatly. Was taking some to an armourer for preasure testing the barrels and others for a general look over and make sure everything was good. went though a phase of buying old shotguns and making them look pretty for twats to hang on walls.

Re. planes, I used to like having a Swiss Army Card which included a little knife. But I lost two as I forgot to take them out of my wallet when I was flying and gave up on them as a result.

FWIW I was in Indonesia once and the Swiss Army Card showed up as an issue before flying. But the pilot offered to take it in the cockpit and give it back to me after we landed, which he did.
