What penknife/multitool ??

Post by Noggin »

I've never had a pen knife   Very wierd here as pretty much everyone has a pen knife!!

What would you recommend? I guess a Swiss Army knife??

Most of my friends seem to have what I call a flick knife in a pocket somewhere. But I'd rather something that maybe had something like scissors/snippers in it somewhere as well as the knife.

Budget definitely not high!! It's probably not something I'll buy too soon so properly budget is not necessary, but not too expensive pleases!!

Knife? Swiss Army

Multi-tool? Leatherman or Gerber  (may be spendy).

(Bibury and Hilka do cheaper multi-tools or go wild and get a Navy Seal's 'SOG Reactor' :) ).

LOL Not sure I'd quite get away with tucking one of my chefs knives in my pocket (closest I can get!) - probably classed as illegal, but also, you know, FUF!! Pen knife probably ok, chefs knife outside of the kitchen, not so good!!

Presumably all the massive bangers you bought at the same time are long since exploded.

I will check the laws - I know that almost all the guys I know carry a decent knife, but not sure if they are legal

What do you want it for?

There's lots of choice, but not everything will actually be useful.

In the UK you cannot carry a lockknife which means most multi tools such as leatherman etc are technically illegal. Do googling to find out the law.
I carry a little spiderco daily so I have something to open boxes with. A swiss army is handy too.

Having nearly cut my thumb off on numerous occasions, i can assure you that Victorinox blades are NOT "locking".

TBH, I'm not 100% sure. I needed to borrow a tool from my mate today as needed to snip a cable tie a couple of times on the way home (used them to secure the mobile so that if the holder fell off, I didn't lose my phone!! )

I do want a knife as I've had a few times it would have been handy. I guess if it has a knife I don't need a snippery thingy! Possbily a screwdriver? Pliers might be useful?

What do you guys need/use?

I'm in France an pretty sure it's ok - there are probably restrictions, but loads of types of 'pocket' knives are sold in pretty much all the shops! Just need to work out what I need!! LOL

Horse wrote: Wed Jun 12, 2024 8:28 pm How about either of these?

https://www.gerber-store.co.uk/gerber-dime-multi-tool

https://www.multi-tool-store.co.uk/leat ... squirt-ps4. (Blade may not lock - but check)
The second one looks more useful, but if not locking means cutting me, prefer not :D :D

Good advice. Also, Gerber folding knives are surprisingly affordable.

I can't be without a penknife,it's used for all sorts every day. A Wenger Snife has been my pocket knife for many moons. It even survived cutting a live cooker wire.(which my BIL assured me was switched off  )
I also use a Gerber Crucial,it's a bit less pocket friendly,so gets carried less.

I have a Swiss 'card' in my wallet, Swiss army knife in the car door pocket, a cheap (but surprisingly good) small unbranded multi-tool in my rucksack.

And a rubbish Stanley multi-tool at home, bought when I'd lost the other one.

I believe the Swiss Army 'card' is the implement of choice for discreet spliff rolling.

Or so a friend tells me. Ahem.

When you say your friends carry 'Flick knives' do you mean actual flick knives or just Laguiole knives which look simillar but aren't automatic, nor do they even lock.

Along with Opinel they're about the most French knives I can think of.

As for multitools I used to own a Leatherman Fuse which had a good main blade in 154CM.
Gave it to a mate though cos I never used it and nowadays I just have a single blade non locking UK legal pen knife. It does have very a good edge retention steel blade though.
