What bikes are just not fun?

Post by Taff »

No consideration for hooning, track-daying and so on. Just boring practicality and something you stick in the garage to drag out when you just want to go to work in the rain, day after day after day. What would you go for? Cheaper the better.

my starter for 10, the CBF, the ultimate in Honda dullness.

700 Transalp... so close, just needed maybe 10 more BHP.
800 Tiger... Lacked the character of a twin and the power of an in line four.
GP100... seized almost daily.
V7II... lovely to look at, but couldn't get the rear suspension to work at all.

I'd caveat that they were all 'fun', just not as fun as the other bikes I've owned. I don't think there's a completely un-fun bike. If you can't make some kind of fun on two wheels, then that's your problem, not the bike's.

Triumph trophy 900 and none the worse for it. Very good commuter but no excitement whatsoever.

The 1979 GSX750ET I had wasn't much fun, mainly due to it weighing the same as the 1100 and having a lot less power, I only bought it because it looked like the 1100, but it definitely wasn't reliable, it was 10 years old and the wiring was problematic, I wasn't upset when it shat itself at Santa Pod.

Apart from that I don't think I've owned any bikes that weren't fun, but the only bike I've bought or transport was my first, a Suzuki TS50ER, and that was fun.

Yamaha XJ600 Diversion - it's about the one bike that I would have always ridden via the shortest possible route

VFR800Fi - I'd heard so much about what a fantastic bike it was, but I had a decent spin on one over the French Alps and it left me cold

CB250 Superdream - my CB250RS singles were so much more fun

XS250 - what an utter turd

BMW 650 GS. Many folk love them but to me a big single cylinder engine is just wheezy, and the road handling of a 19" front wheel with relatively raked out quite long forks is not my cup of tea. Why have I owned two if them? Oh yes, because they eat up potholed roads and are pretty comfortable for two people. Just not really fun.

Unreliable ones.

(I've had 2 bikes that weren't fun overall. One was fun when it worked but it didn't work often enough and the other was reliable but I disliked riding it...other people have fun on them so it's just a personal thing).

I was thinking that too.

But one of the most memorable evenings was a trip out with a mate.

He had a rattly Triumph Tiger 500, I had a Honda CB175 twin.

He loved my bike because it worked. I loved riding the Triumph.

That evening, we had three breakdowns on the Triumph, from an indicator bulb failing through to the r h. exhaust header falling out of the cylinder head (at 60mph).

Oh, and we stopped outside a bike shop in Godalming to look at the brand new Superdream in the window.

Aside from bikes suffering chronic reliability bother,I can enjoy anything. Even then if the thing is worth bothering I'll try to improve the reliability thing.
It's unexpected shit and breakdowns where the fun wears thin, all the rest is dealing with a known quantity.

Gasgas SM700. I wanted it to be fun, but was just dull.

But for the reason KFB gives, sports bikes are probably fine for a spot of fun, but I'd sooner shove bees up my arse than try and contort my body to fitting on one.

If you parked it up anywhere, you never knew if it was going to be there when you came back.
You could tell LC owners walking around town as they ALWAYS carried their helmets so they could get a lift home.

This, mostly.

That said - the Yamaha YB100 I had as a test-passing device was the least fun thing I ever rode - mainly because it handled so badly even it's meagre horsepower was enough to tie the thing in knots and every ride was an exercise in "will I get round this bend...".

Isn't it a YB100 that Eddie is riding in the opening of Guest House Paradiso?

A mid-80s BMW R45 - a gutless, insipid, sack of shit. 30hp meets 450lbs of Teutonic twattery. that handled like a plate of sick.
