Let's not blame the financial crash, or Covid, or even Liz Truss, the rot started long before that.

I think people can make their own judgements on how the last 14 years has gone.

Had a whisper from a friend who 'knows stuff' that "Sunak is about to resign".
Wouldn't be surprised - with ministers turning against him he's finished.

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
People are saying he's off to live in California in August. His kids are already in school there apparently.
Re: Who Will You Vote For?
Nope, I've never had a penny off them.
Always worked PAYE so I've always paid my fair percentage in tax,Ni .
My point is a lot of these billionaires and chronies are not paying their FAIR percentage. They are deliberately given loop holes to avoid paying their fair share .

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
Interestingly you need to earn about 45k+ so you are not a net drain on the country's finances. When people say tax the rich, they are already paying the vast majority of the tax. if they all fuck off, we are screwed.

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
I doubt it's deliberately set this way, but for many years it's been the case that the "net contributor" threshold is about the same as the "higher rate tax payer" oneporter_jamie wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2024 8:30 am Interestingly you need to earn about 45k+ so you are not a net drain on the country's finances.
Companies are given incentives yes, you could call them loopholes I suppose. Better to get a small bit of something rather than a big chunk of nothing.

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
'These billionaires' are often wealth creators, building businesses (which pay tax), employing peple (who pay tax) producing things people need (on which you pay tax) . . .
Indirectly they are responsible for a lot of the revenue that the government take and use. They may not personally pay lots of tax but then their billions are not liquid assets, their billions are their worth and it's tied up in business, property, whatever. If you were very wealthy you too would try and keep as much of it as you could. Your life might be a bit different if those billionaire wealth creators suddenly disappeared.
Your political leaning is called the politics of envy.
Re: Who Will You Vote For?
Nope not envious at all , like I said before I pay my fair share in taxes, I'm happy to do that. I just want the super rich to pay their fair share as well.
So you're wrong.

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
They probably need to pay less then
Top 1% is anyone earning > about £500k BTW. Top 50% is "only" £35k.
So 1% of earners pay slightly more than a quarter of all the income tax in this country. Or...half of the population (the bottom 50%) pay only a third of what those hated rich pay.

Be interesting to see that figure based on % of income that each percentile contributes rather than % contribution to the tax take.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2024 9:20 amThey probably need to pay less then

Thing that always makes me is that (some of) that 1% also qualifies for state pension. (I know in the overall picture it doesn't amount to a hill o' beans but it's a bit odd that they can get benefits. ).

It's actually reasonably equitable!
There are loads of benefits you could legitimately argue should be means tested (pensions and healthcare being the obvious start), but it gets to a point where it's more complicated and costly than just paying it to everyone doesn't it?
It's like how anyone employed by the government (i.e. MoD, civil service etc) still pays income tax on their salary - which was paid from tax take in the first place

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
It shows how skewed things are with the non-progressive taxes pretty clearly too.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2024 9:33 amLike this you mean?Count Steer wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2024 9:31 am Be interesting to see that figure based on % of income that each percentile contributes rather than % contribution to the tax take.

Re: Who Will You Vote For?
If you want a genuinely fair picture you'd also have to add in how much each group "gets" from Tax.
Benefits obviously. But then how do you place a value on policing or financial regulation or arts development or or or or...
