But my main point of the thread was the car, it's a crazy idea, a Dakar racer for the road, which at first glance seems ridiculous, but given the state of UK roads it's probably the next best thing to a big 4x4, especially if you still want sporty.

I'd like to have a car that's robust enough to survive the UK road situation... but the balancing factor is that any such vehicle is also only going to make the situation worse.

And be frigging expensive into the bargain.

Not necessarily, a few grand will get you a 20yr old top of the range Range Rover, and I've waxed lyrical about how brilliant our old one is, we'll never sell it as long as it's viable to keep running.
It's not a 911 Dakar but it's very nice.

Our ideas of affordable are sufficiently different to be dealbreakers. Regardless of the initial purchase cost, I couldn't afford to run a Rangey. (Maintenance costs, insurance, fuel etc etc)

Saw some Porche 911s up on the mountain today. I really liked the old version and hadn't really fallen for the modern ones. But in the flesh, they're rather lovely (not sure what they all were but there were a couple of 911!!).

I'd take one - reckon they'd be freaking awesome on my mountain roads!!

Yes, but there's no tobacco sponsorship these days, so they deliberately did their Roughroads brand up like the old Rothmans branding for retro appeal.

Note that although they only use this paint scheme for all their promo shots, it's actually a £21k option. Standard is white or black

I don't know why but for me, Lambo doing it just seems a step too far. A 911 with tall suspension and kick plates I can just about see as believable as a daily proposition, but a Lambo? Probably just image, but it seems a bit... silly. Even if it's the same concept exactly.

It's a good idea, I wouldn't buy one because I don't like how it looks, I'd rather have one of the old group B 911SCs if I was buying a Porsche.

If you don’t like the daft competition paint job even just a little bit then the child in you is truly dead and that’s a shame.

I think there's big difference in liking a paint scheme and wanting to own it.

Whenever I see a 911 in Viper Green or Shark Blue, or bright orange, I think it looks great... but I'd only own one in black or grey, or something equally dull.

I have no problem with other people's being all shouty and garish, but I'd curl into a ball if I had to be seen in something like that

Yup. I'd insist on the Rothmans colour scheme on my Scalextric (which I still have, with one of the cars being a gold Porsche...with headlights* ) but driving around in public in? *shudder*.

I had the gold and silver 911s with headlights! They were great! You could identify exactly at what point they left the track before searching under the sideboard in the pitch black....

Likewise, if perhaps a neighbour was speccing a Dakar I'd insist on that livery... but maybe not if it was a friend in case he took me out in it
