Aldi whiskies named among best in world

Post by Taipan »

Dont drink the stuff myself, but might be worth a punt if you do?

Aldi whiskies named among best in world
Three whiskies created by Aldi have been named among the best in the world.

The budget supermarket took home three golds at the International Spirits Challenge awards for:

Glen Marnoch Highland Single Scotch Whisky (£18.49, 70cl)
Highland Earl Blended Scotch Whisky (£16.89, 1L)
Samuel Joe’s Straight Kentucky Bourbon (£14.99, 70cl)

In the single malt category, Aldi's submission beat the likes of M&S as well as premium brand Lochlea Distillery, which costs around £45 a bottle.

Other gold winners included Johnnie Walker, Jameson and Glenfiddich.

Aldi was also given three silver medals for its Highland Black Blended Scotch Whisky, Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt Whisky and Glen Marnoch Islay Single Malt Whisky.

"This industry recognition helps to prove that great quality doesn't have to come with a luxury price tag and customers can be confident they're saving money with us, whilst getting the best whisky taste and experience," said Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK.

Aldi whiskies named among best in world
I mean, sort of.

It seems to be a pay to play ranking system where all 900+ entrants are ranked either Gold, Silver or Bronze in the 'tasting' section. Aldi entered some in the 'own brand' section along with M&S and two other entrants and one of theirs got a gold.

So the actual headline should be 'One of Aldi's whiskies ranked slightly higher than one of M&S's' :)

Nobody's trying to say that Aldi competes with the top distilleries or anything.

Be wary of clickbait.

I like to think the Aldi stuff is good enough for everyday drinking (not that I advocate everyday drinking, mind!), and it's all about the price point, really.
Gerry's of Soho owe me a fiver (long story), which is burning a hole in my pocket. I see they have this in stock: https://www.gerrys.uk.com/suntory-yamaz ... serve-70cl

I like the Suntory stuff. The Yamakazi goes down very well.

(I was was gifted a bottle of Port Ellen many years ago. Can't remember the year, but it was sublime. I drank all of it and enjoyed every drop. I later found out how much they now go for... https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/b/40/ ... tch-whisky )

As a daily bourbon drinker I'd not use this to clean the drains let alone drink it again  their rum is shit too :flame:
I suppose their stuff is passable if all you've ever had is whatever is available at your local boozer, and you're down on your luck and need a drink, otherwise why settle for mediocre made down to a price rubbisj.

I've had the Islay version a couple of times and reckon it's as good as Taliskar.
Well worth the 18 quid.

By the time you've splashed a can of Rola Cola in it, it all tastes the same anyway.
