Need something to open a filing cabinet lock
Don't want to drill it as it handy having a lock on it but I don't really want to splash out on expensive locksmith tools that I might never use again. Most annoying thing is the key, along with others that don't get used much, is on one of those ridiculously long, red 'remove before flight' key fobs that I thought would be impossible to mislay.

Get yourself a lock picking set that comes with a clear padlock. It's not expensive or particularly difficult to use, just make sure you lubricate the lock.

Anyone put 'safe cracker' as one of their occupations in the 'what your job' thread?

If there's a number on the lock you can buy replacement keys for it by post.

Can you still tip a filling cabinet backwards and push the locking bar up from underneath?
Or is that a film-fable?

I treated myself to one of these and found that it's surprisingly easy to pick "simple" locks. Make sure you get a UK (not US) picking set. Plenty of howtos online.

Re: Need something to open a filing cabinet lock
I might fork out for a lock picking set. Last time I tried drilling I made a bit of a mess/cock up (still use it for storing bike parts that I'll probably never use or need).
Not on the lock but irritatingly enough I know there is a number stamped on the key, just can't recall it.
