NBT

Post by Eclipse »

I grew up on motorbikes and during the 80's & 90's had loads of them to name a few-
c50, 70 and 90 , sp370 , yz250 , rm 250. rd 250 ac , cb750 , cr500 , xt 500 , mz 125 , dt125mx etc.
I never had a full license so only road the 125's on the streets :shhh:

When I got to about 25 things started going wrong, lost my parents and elder brother in a short space of time and I
pretty much pulled away from everything and everyone and I piled on lots of weight, lots and lots of it and ended up
at about 47st. In the last 5 years I have lost some of it and am now around 30st.

I have a younger brother that I lost contact with for about 10 years but we are back together again
and he's moved down to my area and got a job close to me, we see eachother most days as he pops in after work for a coffee.
He has always been in to bikes too and we wanted to go out for rides together so he got a CRF450X as he has friends that
do a bit of green laning.

I bought a stolen recovered Chinese bike off a breakers on ebay just to see if I could actually ride a bike still and I could ride it fine.
so did that up and got a years mot on it and sold it for more than I paid for it and started searching for a suitable replacement.
Whilst searching I completed the CBT

I have a big belly overhang and it's not easy for me to get on a bike and get comfortable on it but after a few months I decided
on a Suzuki VanVan 125 and the picture below was taken this morning when it was delivered.

Only changes I want to make is remove the heated grips and change the rear shock, the shock doesn't bottom out and theres about
1-1.5 inch of travel left when I am sitting on it and it feels fine to ride but I know its not ideal and will be replaced when funds allow.
I also want to get some extra wide mirrors for it.

Keep the heated grips, the only reason i can think of to remove them would be if they're wired in badly. They're useful even in summer of you get an unexpectedly cold day.

A longer shock should be findable.

Welcome back to biking!

Like RB said, if the grips work properly and are fitted properly keep them ;)

Have a hunt for an owners forum as they will know where to source aftermarket bits and work arounds

Nice one mate and I take my hat off to you for that weight loss. Hagon will build a shock to your spec, so will fit the best spring available for you. Keep us posted.

The heated grips look to be nicely fitted and they work so will leave them on there and thank you
I think the shock from a Sinnis Apache is meant to fit and is longer with preload adjustment, I will look in to that more
to see if it's viable.

There are lots of FB groups for them with all the info I will ever need also Haynes make a workshop manual for them.

The shock has no adjustment at all, do you have any pics of your daughters VanVan ? would love to see it.

I much prefer the look of older bikes than modern ones and this one is in pretty good nick so yeah very happy here.

Thanks  , After all the Hagon suggestions I have been looking in to them and they seem to be around 350-450 but I guess that's very spec dependant, when funds allow I will give them a bell and have a chat to them about it see what they recommend.

Did some more miles over the weekend and I am blown away at how easy and comfortable it is to ride.
It does a good job of keeping up with traffic to 30, slows down from 30-40 and 45 is about the max with me on it,
and that's fine for me because at the moment I have very little confidence so am happy sitting at 40, I just have to avoid faster roads.
I have never been in to going fast on the road as I like taking in the surroundings and seeing stuff I would normally miss in a car.
Eventually I would like to upgrade to maybe a 250 so I can cruise at 60 for longer journeys.

Here's a few pics from the weekend. The CRF is my brothers (he's the one on the back of the vanvan) the guy on the front is my best friend who has been coming to see me every sunday for about 10 years, he's a beast and cycles from watford to hemel and back (14 miles each day) 6 days a week
and his mum makes me christmas dinner.

A few weeks ago my brother and I went to a bike meet at the John Bunyan pub is St Albans, brother sold his CRF450X as he needs to commute on a bike now so bought a Z1000. Below is a video of my ride there, I start by following my brother to leverstock green where he continues to Hemel Hempstead to meet up with the guy on the black R1 but I turn right and make my own way to the pub, we meet a couple of friends there which turned up on a red CBR. I think there were something like 200 bikes and 96 scooters which turned up during the day.

VanVan is going well only things I have done to it since last post is fit new exhaust as it sounded like a sewing machine before
and fit bar end mirrors as the old ones were too close together and I couldn't see anything behind me at all.

That's made me miss the summer even more  Good turn out for the meet though, lots of shiny metal.

I've not been out in near 3 weeks now, hopefully this weekend but looks like it's going to be significantly colder :angry-cussingblack: Roll on spring

What does your bro think of the Z1000? Looks like a set of Campbells on that, they'll not be quiet. :D

It's a fun little bike to ride, you have to work the gearbox but that makes it more enjoyable for me.

I used to go to school with a guy from Harpenden, Longfield road I think it was, I rode from Hemel Hempstead to his house on many interesting and not so legal motorbikes when I was younger lol.

Well spotted on the Exhausts, he really likes the bike as it's a lot nicer to ride than the CRF and it's ideal for his commute.
We are used to his CRF450 with Yoshi system which used to rattle my back door when he blipped it in the back garden so
the Z1000 is not quite so loud and much nicer (so my neighbours tell me).

That's a super clean example. 8-)

The Campbells look and sound great on those early Zeds. Those pipes are well sought after among Zed owners,so he'd easily sell them if he was changing,or selling the bike.

Bit of an update here.

I bought the interceptor 650 without seeing it and when my brother got it home to me I sat on it and its too uncomfortable for me to ride
and I cant comfortably sit on the bike I need to ride for the full licence lessons & test so I am stuck on 125's and CBT.

I wanted a 125 which was newer and would cruise at a higher speed than the Van Van's 40/45 so looked at getting a new scooter and
settled on a 2025 Nmax Techmax 125 but went to a dealers and couldn't sit on that properly either.

The Van Van is super comfortable for me to sit on and ride and hasn't missed a beat so I am going to stick with that but wouldn't mind finding
an old tax and mot exempt 125 to do up as a project.

The rear shock doesn't bottom out with me on it unless I hit a speed bump too fast but I have been thinking about getting one made up
to suit my weight but don't know what I would gain from that as the bike seems to ride fine as it is ?

Brothers z1000 is perfect is very happy with it and says its a keeper

The DRZ brother got yesterday just for riding with me on the Van Van as the z1000 isn't ideal at slower speeds and we plan on doing a bit of
greenlining on them too. It wouldn't idle (the seller told us this) and we found the idle jet completely blocked where the bike had been sitting
for the last 9 months (he should have run the carb out of fuel before parking it up).

Looking forward to getting out on the bikes a lot this summer

Another update - lots of pictures
I sold the Interceptor and dint lose any money on it which makes a change.
The Van Van had to go for it's mot a week ago and it sailed trough with flying colours,
but the front engine mount was bugging me because the bikes pretty much immaculate
apart from that so I took that off and gave it a bit of seeing too, I am leaving it for a few
days to harden before putting it back on.

My Brothers GF passed her CBT and has bought an AJS 125 and loves it
and cant stop riding it. They do a lot of greenlaning together.

In a previous post above somewhere I mentioned I wanted to get a tax & mot exempt 125
to do up as a project well I got one today.

It's a 1982 Honda CG 125 registered as an Historic Vehicle so tax & mot exempt and I
was very lucky to get it because the seller had been inundated with messages from people
either wanting to buy it or parts that went with it.
The seller turned out to be a friend of my brothers GF and lived 10 mins from her house
so she went with my brother to see it and my brother bought it on my behalf and rode
it back to my house (about 20 miles) and it didn't miss a beat.
It has had lots of new parts and come with lots of spares including a good engine and
old tank and seat which is solid with no rust.

My brother said I had a massive grin on my face when I first see it and i'm kinda falling
in love with it already, maybe because it takes me back to when I was younger and messing
around on bikes like it. I can sit on it quite comfortably so looking forward to going out for a
ride on it in the next few days.

My plan was to do a semi dirt bike conversion to it and make it similar to an old XL 125S and I may
still do that but for now I want to keep it as is and get a 100 or so miles on it and then decide on
weather it replaces the Van Van or I keep both.

The biggest difference you're going to notice between the VanVan and the CG is the brakes :)

The day after getting the CG my brother's GF bought another AJS 125 which she wants to use for greenlaning, it was quite a ride getting it back from
Pulborough to Hertford with a stop at my place along the way. She did the A roads and my brother did the M25.

Image
Image
Image

A couple of days after getting the CG we all went out for a ride and it was clear straight away the CG wasnt happy,
anything above half throttle the engine would die, putting the choke on half way made it run much better but it was still shite.

The carb fitted to the CG is one of the cheap PZ 26 things you get off ebay or amazon, they are advertised as being suitable for a wide
range of bikes so the chances of it being setup correctly for the CG are next to none.
It came with a 90 main jet so we put a 105 in and it run perfect off choke so we tried a 115 as I would rather it run richer than leaner
but it run crap so we went back to the 105.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/VM22-PZ26-26mm ... 108&sr=8-7

If you do a throttle whack from idle to full the engine instantly dies out,
I thought that this was a jetting isssue and is another reasons for trying the 115 but it turns out that on later
models honda used a carb with a diaphram pump in it to fix this problem. I got a few of these in the CG spares so will probly
look in to this at a later date but for now the carburation is fine.

Image
Image

The top end is noisy so in the near future we will tighten up the tappets, clean and gap the points and check the ignition timing.

We put the old tank back on the CG with a pair of AliExpress side panels as I prefer the old survivor look rather than the tarted up look,
and I put together a tool roll for the CG, just in case.

Image
Image
Image
Image

The one thing I got when I rode the CG and when following my brother when he was riding it is just how much fun it is.
Its much smaller than the van van, lighter with narrow tyres and handle bars, it's more like riding an ebike,
and I was giggling so hard when he was doing his hand signals at junctions, that ride was the most fun I have had.

I probably wont ride it much but will keep it insured so my brother can and for those times when I feel like it.
I like working on it and having something to tinker with.

Here is a video of my brother taking it for a test ride with his GF on one of her AJS 125's.

That's it for now folks.
