To be fair though, employing ex cons has worked very well for Timpsons and for those he employs.

Mr Timpson is doing good works rehabilitating folk through catering training too.

Working with a bunch of dungaree wearing, hairy armpitted Camden luvvies might not do much for a 'criminal class' person's skill set. Although acting, costume/disguise, antisocial hours...it has possibilities. :D

Plenty of the criminals and “benefits class” don’t want that or any job.

Does anyone know what the 'criminal class' is? Is Jeffrey Archer in it? It seems like something made up by the Victorians and revived as a term that everyone projects their own biases/prejudices on.

Theatre job advert terms 'position people as inferior'

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd114jv832mo

Cracks me up when the liberal elite of North London are trying so desperately to out-woke one another that they manage to offend absolutely everyone in one fell swoop. Nice work, lads/lasses/...er...'ladesses'?
Are the benefits classes and criminal classes complaining about being called that? Or is it other people complaining on their behalf?

I think there are plenty of the criminal classes who are quite proud to be criminal class and don't need some chinless wonder defending them.
The people complaining are university-educated and middle-class, and desperately trying to not to be.

The people put that ad together are probably the result of a trust fund and several years poncing around at Central St. Martin's before coming to the rescue of the crims and scum of the nation.

You can use it however you want I suppose, ....
Which, as terminology goes, renders it pretty useless. Sort of 'It's my word, it means whatever I want it to mean'.

Terminology usually requires definition. I'm not annoyed on behalf of anyone labelled with the terms, just that people seem to be making up their own versions of the English Language as they go along, using pseudo-scientific terms that look like they mean something when it appears they can mean almost anything.

If they use it enough it will enter into common language and you'll eventually see it in the dictionary.

It's an interesting subject, yesterday I showed my wife an original text from the 12th century and asked her to read it, it was obviously impossible for her, it might as well have been Greek. I was reading about the third crusade and ended up with a text that I was struggling to read, my wife heard me tutting and asked me what I was doing, so we got into a conversation about how the language in this country has evolved over the years.

Anyway, I think "criminal classes" isn't terribly confusing as a term, it presents a fairly clear image, in my mind anyway.
Benefits classes might be a bit more open to misinterpretation, does that include long term sick? Although whilst hard to define they wouldn't be that hard to find, pop into any Witherspoons on a weekday morning and you'll find plenty to discuss it with.
Yeah, the term 'benefit classes' is a pearler. To some it will mean that group of bone idle work dodgers determined to siphon as much money out of the state as they possibly can for as long as they can*. They're not likely to be reading theatre job ads and actually applying are they? So that's clearly not what the advertiser meant. Ditto the 'criminal class'...do they actually want to recruit an active, persistent and, so far, uncaught criminal? (Being Camden it's a possibility  ).

But yes, language evolves and actual meanings can change. Sometimes, with persistence it gets wilfully distorted. In this case it seems to be getting invented.

* as opposed to people claiming childcare benefit so they can go to work. Or those that have been injured at work and are on sick benefit etc etc. :obscene-birdiedoublered:

That’s what makes the wokey theatre luvvies’ recruitment ad so funny.

Apparently...

It is a phrase that is fast being adopted by socially conscious types as the new, even more politically correct version of 'ethnic minority' or 'BAME' (black, Asian and minority ethnic). Let's be clear, 'global majority' is a fundamentally useless term.

There's even a Wiki on it (that looks like it was written by some sort of woke social anthropologists). Apparently people don't belong to a particular 'race' any more they're 'racialised as' - as if it's something that's applied to them rather than an innate characteristic.

Give me strength.

Ah, right, so we mustn't call a minority a minority, we call them a majority instead. That will solve all sorts of problems.

Not!

I suppose it's location dependent

So i the UK, it's what used to be BAME, i.e. Black, Asian and Middle Eastern. In China it will be Black, Middle Eastern and White. Etc.

Is that how it works? (I bet it isn't. )

Speaking of changes in the meaning of words, this popped up this morning.

I will now behave like a bimbo and also use the term 'hermeneutical disarmament' at every opportunity. :D

That's a very long-winded way of describing people using the wrong word for something or wrongly applying a specific term to describe something more general.

I prefer a good old fashioned malapropism, I heard someone use the word translucent instead of transient, I wondered if she meant that they were so transient that they had become translucent
:D I recently found out about another thing like malapropisms....eggcorns.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggcorn

I think the difference with these is that they generally approximate in meaning to the original. Sometimes very approximately. :D

East to see the diplomatic fix for that, just stop recognising Israel.

Bit of a problem with that. Israel is a member of the UN.

The adoption on 29 November 1947, by the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution recommending the adoption and implementation of a plan of partition of Mandatory Palestine was one of the earliest acts of the United Nations. This followed the report of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine.
