Pictures of the twin towers burning might have been a bit much but generally it's just funny, maybe they should have thought about how pub kicking out time in Dublin is early evening in NY.

This is a big deal. A precursor of the forthcoming battery revolution with batteries expected to have ~4 times the energy density ...

It's an even bigger deal if it gives the Chinese a massive boost.

They're already leading the way on EVs.

Said it before, but...the Chinese stand a very good chance of putting BMW, Mercedes, Ford etc out of business if the latter don't pull their socks up.

Western governments are already putting massive tariffs on Chinese EVs to prevent such an outcome. Remains to be seen how long that can last.

Plenty of news links to slowing EV sales of course...but the US now have a 100% import tariff on Chinese EVs. Why do you need such a tariff if noone wants to buy an EV

It is worth remembering though that an LFP battery (as per thst link) typically has lower energy than the sort you'd find in most EVs. I don't think that news article it revealing any great new breakthrough, they've just made a very big battery. Hence why then mention range and not kWh.

I don't think any other country wants to risk being beholden to China for essential goods, I can't see it getting better for China any time soon.

That battery announcement sounds great if I make a few assumptions about size, charging time, lifespan, cost etc. I don't like assumptions.

Solve the range anxiety issue and halve prices. Watch demand soar.

Indeed, but as far as I can work out that Chinese battery in the news article does neither of those things, it's just really big! LFP tech is quite old.

Mercedes have already built prototype leccy cars with demonstrated >1000km range without using a meganormous battery, they're in the news. This ain't new. The challenge is making them so people can/will buy them.

That EQXX looks just like the Audi e-Tron GT, which isn't a bad thing, I think the GT is the best looking Audi by a mile and I don't usually like Audis.

Electric vehicles is a very short term solution until viable alternative solution is found, the carbon footprint for electric vehicles is horrendous, they will be banned soon after petrol/diesel solutions. Most other maker apart from China and musk solutions are actively looking at other options including hydrogen.

Electric cars were on the roads getting on for 150 years ago but didn't catch on because they were powered by battery and had a limited range. All these years later we have a similar problem.

If you read the article the "1,000 Km range" is qualified -
Range figures preliminary and based on digital simulations in real-life traffic conditions. The VISION EQXX has not undergone type approval or homologation
So, not there yet in the real world.

They've actually driven it more than 1000km on a single charge, it's not entirely theoretical. They also drove from Stuttgart to Silverstone and did a couple of laps at the end, all on one charge.

It's a prototype like I said...not even a prototype, a technology demonstrator.

The point is, people are already starting to make much longer range electric cars which don't just rely on a huge battery which takes days to recharge. That's as much the future as fancy new battery technology.

People say this alot but it's generally fundamental misunderstanding.

Said it loads of time, but any serious hydrogen car is still going to be electric and it'll probably still have a (small) battery too. Hydrogen combustion cars which go brum-brum just don't make any sense - they're way less efficient, you still have the noise (which most people don't like) and crucially you still have NOX and similar emissions. The only reason manufacturers would persist with Hydrogen ICE cars is so they can sell V8s and V12s with enormous profit margins, same reason they sell V8s and V12s which run on dyno juice.

Synthetic fuels are a joke, even more the case they'll be used to power exotic cars sold at huge profit margins. Hence why it's people like Porsche and not Dacia really pushing them.

All the 'normal' Hydrogen cars - if they ever come to the fore - will be fuel cell electric, as indeed is already the case with most of the Hydrogen cars you can buy right now.
