Is Aliexpress anything like Temu where you need to spend £15 to get the free postage? Its a buy more tat ployPirahna wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 6:05 pm Buy a jar opener on Amazon, or buy a few different ones on Aliexpress for the same price. I find the metal ones with the serated lid grip will damage the lid, I currently use a silicon one which is fine. I don't have strength issues though, my hands are fucked up with dupuytren's contracture and I can't hold some things, jars being a good example.

If its a jar of say sauce and you are going to use it all just stab the lid. You could just but a bunch of various size silicon lids and stab them all.

Re: Home aids for the less able!!
I do have something that does that for now, although it'll need replacing soon.
Trouble with asking someone in a shop (for two months, mostly in the valley) do do that is that the pressure/altitude change may cause leakage
That's brilliant info. The worst lids are the ones from the fridge. New ones I can generally do once I've popped the seal with the thingy I have here. Which I actually bought to open pop bottles But it still works for those size lids.Count Steer wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 7:26 am
Last time the opener failed was on a jar (preserved lemons) from the fridge. Got it open once it had warmed up to room temp.
Part of the issue is that I can't use the both hands, so probably can't do that - I generally don't clap when everyone else does (band nights and the like!) cos it hurts But I might have a look for a soft/solid 'pad' to use. Something like squash ball materialYambo wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 7:56 am If I have a tight lid - it'll only be tight on first opening, I give the bottom of the jar a hefty whallop with the palm of my hand. It's got to be a decent, solid hit with something that's not going to break the jar (banging it on a worktop for example is not recommended) so a girly hit might not work but following the wallop the lid will turn off easily.
It's worth trying instead of spending money that could be spent on beer.
I have one of those, different brand, but I'll save the Jarkey one as mine will die at some point - it's had more use in the last 6 years than in the previous en!! LOL
AWESOME info. Will give that a go
Before Yorick sees this - you're recommending I use a sharp thing and attempt to make a hole in a lid?!!
The major issue is having the strength to either hold the jar whilst the strong arm turns the lid, or turning the lid with the rubbish arm. Even when the seal is broken there are days that the spazzy arm is extra spazzy!!

Re: Home aids for the less able!!
This looks fairly handy and extra simple (simple is good for kitchen for me )
I can get a decent grip but don't then have the strength to also turn the lid whilst gripping. I wonder if this could be the answer as its got leverage Maybe
Interesting, putting Jarkey into Amazon Fr brought up a whole load of various options, so that was cool

If you had 2 of them you could grip the jar base with one and the lid with the other maybe? That'd give a fair leverage.Noggin wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 10:27 am This looks fairly handy and extra simple (simple is good for kitchen for me )

It's only the one hand/arm that's feak and weeble! The other is fine, but can't undo a jar that's stubborn when only one hand works properCount Steer wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 11:11 amIf you had 2 of them you could grip the jar base with one and the lid with the other maybe? How about one of these? Seems to have good reviews, and designed for one-handed operation...

Re: Home aids for the less able!!
Trap the open end of this in a doorway or drawer, so you can lean against the door with your body, then your good hand should be strong enough to open the jar.Noggin wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 10:27 am This looks fairly handy and extra simple (simple is good for kitchen for me )

It’s a nice idea, but my current apartment has no where to put it!!! . But I’ll save as a maybe for the futureSunny wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2024 8:18 am How about one of these? Seems to have good reviews, and designed for one-handed operation...

Good call for the future!! Sadly . But for now I do really need to keep using the weak arm because the less I use it the less able it will be and the worse the strong shoulder will be (already have a few issues with the strong shoulder due to compensating for the FUBAR one )Rockburner wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2024 8:25 amTrap the open end of this in a doorway or drawer, so you can lean against the door with your body, then your good hand should be strong enough to open the jar.Noggin wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 10:27 am This looks fairly handy and extra simple (simple is good for kitchen for me )
