Yorick doesn't need to post on this thread as we're all well aware of how happy he is with his lifestyle
My idea of success is not having to struggle for money and being able to do most of what I want to do, what's yours?

In a financial context I've not reached it. I'd like to be able to get a bill for £500 for example and not care. Or to take Mrs Weeksy to a posh place and not worry about the bill.

In every other aspect of the word, I'm winning massively. I've got it all.

I suppose its achieving your goals?
For me, that's fulfilling my role as a husband, a dad, a friend etc and not having to worry about sustaining it, whilst having lots of laughs along the way.

That's a good summary.

Things I can influence are good. Comfortable house in a nice part of a good town. Work that is interesting, challenging but rewarding. Sufficient money to be comfortable and if a big unexpected bill came in, manageable.

And a family I'm very proud of.

Is the question posed in such a way as to equate success with happiness/contentment? The two aren't mutually exclusive,but can have very different answers. A person can appear successful in the conventional sense,yet not be happy or content,conversely someone else may be at peace with themselves,but deemed a loser by a materialistic society.

I think for most of us,it's finding that balance.

In the context of this thread, is success the realisation of long held dreams,or is success learning to be content with what you have?

'Being content' allows you to be successful in a very different way.

I'm not someone driven by the need to have newer, better (or whatever) possessions. Can someone who is actually say 'that's enough, now I'm content'?

I think that's the illusion,which is indulged,for obvious reasons,by those selling stuff. To some degree,we all suck up this one.

My job is varied enough that it keeps me interested.
I wouldn't complain at a bit more money but who would?
Enough money so I can spend quality time with my family.

I'm not even faintly interested in money for the sake of it, its just a means to have quality time and a roof over my head.

For me, meeting the significant other of your dreams early in life, and staying happily together having raised some kids and seeing them leave the nest content that they will make a good go of it themselves. That's success. Regardless of status.
I wish I could have achieved it but I shagged around and ended up in a loveless partnership, staying together for the sake of the kid. That said, I consider my offspring at the age of 10 a success from my perspective and if I can keep that up until she can stand on her own feet, I'll have succeeded.
I don't give a fuck about riches. I just need enough to keep the wolf from our door, with a bit left over for beer and toys. Unfortunatey, my status-obsessed partner disagrees, hence the friction.

A question for the OP? But, I suspect the answer is a combination of both. Having realised ambitions and dreams is really very affirming. Understanding that your not being that Astronaut, Motorcycle world champ or Kylie's pubic coiffeur isn't in itself failure, is in itself, a success.
I've made a good number of really stupid decisions in my life, but I'm comfortable that they were a good idea at the time and I live with it comfortably.

That said. If you're in the chair, I'll have a pint of hindsight please
