Navigation google maps offline

right guys, I am planning to cycle from North London to box hill, I am going to use my phone as navigation, but just worried the battery will die, I've got a spare Android I use with google maps downloaded off line, but google maps won't let me use cycle routes off line. anyway to change this???

at some point I want a wahoo bolt for navigation on the bike, so I don't really want to spend any money on an app.

any ideas???

British Cycling guidance
Throughout the pandemic, national governing body British Cycling has been working with the government to offer guidance to cyclists during the pandemic.

As the Parliament voted through the new lockdown on Wednesday, November 4, British Cycling published its latest guidance, which says that all cycling activities and events in England will be suspended under the new lockdown.

The suspension will last until December 3.

That's not 'riding' that's events, like racing, etc... organised stuff... Not riding the lanes with your mates, that's part of exercise.

We're allowed both pushbikes and motorbikes as confirmed by BMF etc.

Dunno man, i don't use em. If i'm completely lost i'll use Google Maps for a quick check, but that's about it.

I've got a Garmin Edge 520, i've never once used the map function on it though, i use it purely for recording time and distance.

oh ok, I guess ill just go and use the phone every know and agin once lost. can't be that bad to get there.

With those sort of rides i'd be 4-5 villages and stick them on my top-tube and tape over them.... It's not like you're in the middle of nowhere.

Do you really need Google maps, from memory it'd be head into central London then follow the A24

I've not tried it with cycle routes - but I'd imagine that the issue is that Google Nav likes to update it's 'track' every so often, dependant on conditions (on roads that would be traffic, accidents etc), not sure what the actual reason would be on cycle tracks but you can bet they've thought of something. This is mainly due to the fact that the route planning is done on the remote server, NOT on the phone. If you want to save battery (and bandwidth), then you can download all the map-tiles (the background images that are 'under' the route) and that will reduce your bandwidth usage enormously.

The main battery usage though comes from powering the GPS aerials and constantly maintaining the phone's knowledge of where it is. There's not a lot you can do about that tbh if you want constant instructions on which way to go (the phone HAS to know where it is in order to give you the right instruction).

Your best bet would probably be to take a battery pack with you and keep the phone on charge while you're travelling. Something like a 1.2Ah ( 1200mAh) battery will effectively double or triple your phone's battery capacity and keep it charged. You could rig it up on the bike, or simply take it with you and plug the phone in whenever you stop for a break.

Me too, but it's cycling across London, it's going to be an achievement to get lost, he's more likely to get stabbed than lost.

A217 and then take the turn off sign posted Box Hill (this is from 25 years ago on a motorcycle when we lived in Tooting)
I don't think you'll have any problems, even in the wilds of Surrey the cycle routes are well sign posted, if you can get to Richmond Park you'll be fine from there onwards.
Hopefully Rykas will be closed so you can't sample their "food"
