Drivers at Junctions
I'm noticing more drivers sitting a car length back from junctions in a position making it difficult for them to see when they can safely make their manoeuvre. Is this a new thing being taught to drivers,or is it caused by general lack of spatial awareness,or some other fuckwittery?

My wife always stops a car length back from traffic light controlled junctions. I used to question why she never went up to the line, but she says there's no need to go right up to the line and if anything happens she's away from it!

I do it at one junction only, and that's because the GPO have in their infinite widow placed one of their boxes right in the line of sight when you sit at the junction

There's a T junction by me where you have to creep a few feet across the line to see oncoming from the right. You just hope the car behind leaves space for a quick back up.

I think it is a reaction - to the other idiots who cut the corner when turning right into a junction. Cars now have high-geared powered steering, but the easier it gets to make the turn square the lazier the drivers get. I swear some of the local Chelsea tractors have never used 3/4 of the lock available.

I often hang back at roundabouts. Gives a bit of acceleration space when aiming for shorter gaps
Perceptually-wise, stuff approaching from the right is at an angle, so it may be easier to assess speed and distance.
Also, most people - me included - are probably too pessimistic about how long their car is*. With some cars / seating position / driver heights, they may not even be able to see the bonnet, let alone know where the front is.
* When parking, I sometimes use how the 'line' (or whatever) is relative to the door mirror.

I take odd positions at some junctions in the UK due to moho being lhd and various obstructions built into the chassis, but normally up to the line if I can!

My view was obstructed a few days ago by two immensely fat fucks waddling along the pavement. Had to wait until they were about 150ft away before I could see along the road & pull out onto the main road.

But the Capri wouldn't stop in time so I'd be coming out of the junction sideways with the wheels spinning in a cloud of smoke while all the ladies gasped in awe at my throbbing purple behometh (or something like that in my 3000GT when I was about 20 )

Oh back in the real world I do it at a few junctions especially a staggered crossroads near me where people try to straight line it and cut the corner or busses swing wide. There's been far to many prangs there...
