Are the joints red and swollen, if not it isn't gout.
I get pains in my toe joints, I thought it was gout, so I went to the doctors and was told it wasn't gout because it wasn't red and swollen, mine is arthritis, and it fecking hurts at night

Visually, they're tickity-boo. Nothing red nor swollen.

I'm 75kg and c.1.83m tall. Wear 32 inch waist strides,so
not overweight.

Eat bloody healthily. Never eat processed shite.

Train 5-6 times a week and walk the mutt often.

I drink a couple of litres of water a day I reckon, plus ginger infusion poncy tea stuff. Plenty of hydration.

So I don't see that I'm gout material, barring having a few (ok, quite a few) bevvies over the weekend.

Maybe it ain't gout.

I don't remember mine being visibly red or swollen but the doctor said it was gout. I didn't get the tests but the symptoms match and usual gout remedies seem to work.
A doctor saying it's arthritis and not gout makes me worry a bit.

That fills me with confidence, I was told it definitely wasn't gout, sent me for X-rays, couldn't find anything and decided it was arthritis, tbh it wasn't a great experience

Arthritis is a pretty catch-all term. From the Arthritis Foundation:

'Arthritis isn’t a single disease; the term refers to joint pain or joint disease, and there are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions'.

So 'gout is a form of arthritis'? Well, err, yes it gives you joint pain.

If you want to go see your GP - From memory you will need your urate levels checking - The colcichine course is effective and quite short if it is Gout.
AIUI Gout is very painful.

I was decorating last weekend and getting warm, I noticed I was a bit dehydrated but didn't think much of it. On Sunday the joints in my right thumb started aching a bit so I drank more water and it went away, a couple of days later there was a dull ache in my foot that felt like mild cramp and now it's back to my thumb.
It's my signal to be careful before it gets really painful, I'll avoid pate and drink more water and hope I don't end up hobbling around.

There are so many foods on the don't eat list that I ignore most of it, even some veg can make gout worse.

The dehydrated bit is interesting. I really don't have gout, but I know that the last two - three weeks I've not been drinking enough water. Usually I'm really good at drinking a lot normally but have failed the last two and a bit weeks.

In that time, my left thumb has been seriously painful in the main joint and also the knuckle below the nail. Actually scared me silly when it started as issues with my left hand is something I REALLY don't need given the reduced ability of the right hand!!

I'm currently ignoring it and trying ibuprofen gel or CDB oil - but now I've read this I will get back to some serious drinking of water!!

I’ve had gout since I did a track day with Weeky at Brands ( smacked my foot into the tarmac, knackered the joint and got overloaded with uric acid)

I would have got it anyway- but this was the trigger that just threw it at me sooner.

So that’s at least 15 years. I think.

I’ve been taking prophylactic meds for at least a decade ( previously just dosed up when got a flare up).

I’ve had gout in my toes, knees and chest.

Meds I take: Feboxestat ( I tried allupurinol but it gave me awful headaches). I also take corresponding esomeperazole for reflux (that feboxestat causes). Not had an attack in years.

You’re supposed to avoid shellfish, bacon, broad beans ( stuff with purins in it) …lager.

I avoid lager at all costs now. Even one pint will cripple me. Ale/whisky all fine.


Have to take the meds. Long term prognosis poor for heart stuff with gout if untreated.

I had a flare up at 3am Friday morning, hunted around and couldn’t find any cocodamol so was resigned to agony until I could get to a pharmacy.

My delightful hound then urgently demanded my attention at 5am so I had to take him out before his arse exploded everywhere. Fuck me, even breathing near my ankle hurt let alone being dragged by 34kg of dog desperately searching for the ‘right’ blade of grass to arse squirt all over

Staggered home and managed to find some cocodamol lurking in a kitchen drawer, necked those with two ‘brofen and a pint of squash and then got some sleep. Two punnets of grapes, another pint of squash, more tablets and I was able to more around freely enough to drive and work. Two further punnets of grapes throughout the day and a conscious effort to keep up the fluids has seen a miraculous abatement to the severe pain although the resulting bruising is still tender to the touch.

Gout sucks
