I guess them big container ships take some stopping/turning if you get it wrong?
Tho' i'd expect that they'd be using a local pilot to navigate the river?

One way is to use the stated lat/long of a buoy as a waypoint on your plotter. The maintenance boats do try to drop them right on the spot.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 8:31 am I guess them big container ships take some stopping/turning if you get it wrong?

The more usual method is just being pissed or absent from the bridge.

Bridge had working lights on it (you can see it in the video). It’s like it was aimed at the pier/column! You can also see some maintenance vehicles parked on the bridge .

The columns are supposed to be able to take the impact of a ship anyway...for now very obvious reasons.

Re: In todays news...
Maybe the pilots were arguing about who had control? There's apocryphal tales about that. IIRC one involving towing a salvaged wreck from Scapa Flow down the Forth, the tug aiming for one side of a bridge support and the towed wreck trying to go the other side..

97% of all statistics on the internet are made up.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 11:54 am Two-thirds of accidents occur within 5 miles of home...
Even if that statistic is correct, it doesn't tell us anything without context. How much of our driving is done within 5 miles of home? If it's more than two thirds then we're safer within that 5 mile bubble.

Seems that the ship was losing power prior to the collision.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 8:31 am I guess them big container ships take some stopping/turning if you get it wrong?

And drawing on a shockingly small sample size (one, me) the last accident I had was no more than half a mile from home...
