Really? I'd have guessed that the biggest contribution to income tax comes from the 40-55 sort of age bracket? But that is just a guess, so I'll look it up.

I'll compromise and raise the cut off to 70

You took that comment seriously?

Go back to Irie's post re the amount of under 40s not working - there is going to be a huge issue in the future with revenue - and a highly dependant population.
All of this doesn't really matter - it's a Western thing. But it is not a SEA thing - Europe is now the old world. Commerce and development will be driven from elsewhere

The only way your way will work is for Council/Govt to build houses in massive quantities. And middle England will not be happy with their negative equity.

The Right to Buy concept was essentially flawed. Take local authority housing stock and sell it off to long term renters at a bargain price . And into that borrowing money was cheap ...
And so all local authority houses disappeared. So they had to build more - that ultimately could be bought by tenants under the market rate.

1) We have a lazy, over entitled sector of the population who would rather claim maximum benefits than do something positive
Yeah, but my plan for compulsory televised death matches for the over 60s still hasn't gained traction :(
But you will remove most of the taxpayers from the workforce. Who will pay for Generation Xs quiet quitting and mental health support?
The over 60s death-match could be a winner if we start with those in the House of Lords

I misquoted Tory party membership - it's 172k - but still a tiny amount of the electorate
As for the European Parliament being in Belgium - politically it could only go there, and Luxembourg without causing a massive war in Europe again.
Yup. And Strasbourg which is in France/Germany depending how old your map is. :D

172k? I'm a bit surprised it's that high tbh. There was a R4 programme about how old the membership is and how it isn't getting replenished ie young people aren't joining, so the party depends on a relatively few large donors (peers-in-waiting  ).

I am amazed it was that high ( government source) - I had read that it had fallen to an all time low

I read that interesting but flawed. In the past private landlords existed, I lived in a rented house, as did both sets of grandparentsl Landlords were perhaps less rapacious.

The females in my family seem to live a very long time. TBF, my Grandpop lived till his 80's but had a heart attack at the helm of the yacht they lived on, luckily before they actually left the harbour!! Now that is the way to go!

My paternal grandmother died in her 80's and spent her last few years in a home with dementia. She didn't know my Dad, me or any other family.

My maternal grandmother lived until she was 101 - but the last 20 years were in various homes along with failing hearing, failing eye sight and a crumbling spine due to osteoporosis. OK, so she got the letter from the Queen but at what cost. The last ten years she had hardly any interaction with other residents because she couldn't see or hear them :( And a life in pain due to the crumbling spine :( :(

I 100% do NOT want to live to old age without mental and physical faculties. No issues with false limbs or a wheel chair - life is possible to still be pretty good in those situations. But if life is a struggle to know people, look after myself etc, then nope. Not my thing.

I have wondered most of my life why we treat animals with more kindness in old age than we do humans. If someone is old but still either looked after at home and loved, or able to look after themselves, no issues. But when someone doesn't know which way is up or is physically unable to be comfortable, then WTF would you force them to continue living in pain, distress or confusion?

I have a deal with one of my oldest friends to help with that (both ways) and if she is no longer around, I'll write it down (in case assisted suicide becomes legal) and definitely find someone else with a similar mindset willing to help!!

My Mum managed 95, and up to almost 90 she was amazing. The last 18 months she was bedridden after breaking a second hip, and just wanted to die. She had to endure 18 months of hell.

This is where we are not allowed to treat our family and humans in general with the compassion that we'd treat our pets.

It's so sad for you mum and your family xx

I have already put in my LPA that, should assisted dyng become legal and I am unable to make my own decision, that my executors should use the well-loved pet test. If they would put their pet dog or cat to sleep then do the same for me please.

We have legally enforceable LPA.

Our test is that it is OK to use tubes etc.to help recovery, but they can not be used just to prevent us from dying.

Similar to my Da. He often joked to medical staff,"things were great until I hit 90". His last couple of years were compounded misery, which he eventually called to a halt by refusing food or drink. Death doesn't come as fast as you might think and it most definitely isn't a pleasant process. It is shamefully, the only tool left to ordinary people when quality of life is no more.
