Assisted suicide for those who want it. I am in favour of it, I have no wish to spend the last few years of my life with no quality of life, no hope, and a burden to others. Pass me the cyanide capsule please.
The females in my family seem to live a very long time. TBF, my Grandpop lived till his 80's but had a heart attack at the helm of the yacht they lived on, luckily before they actually left the harbour!! Now that is the way to go!
My paternal grandmother died in her 80's and spent her last few years in a home with dementia. She didn't know my Dad, me or any other family.
My maternal grandmother lived until she was 101 - but the last 20 years were in various homes along with failing hearing, failing eye sight and a crumbling spine due to osteoporosis. OK, so she got the letter from the Queen but at what cost. The last ten years she had hardly any interaction with other residents because she couldn't see or hear them
And a life in pain due to the crumbling spine
I 100% do NOT want to live to old age without mental and physical faculties. No issues with false limbs or a wheel chair - life is possible to still be pretty good in those situations. But if life is a struggle to know people, look after myself etc, then nope. Not my thing.
I have wondered most of my life why we treat animals with more kindness in old age than we do humans. If someone is old but still either looked after at home and loved, or able to look after themselves, no issues. But when someone doesn't know which way is up or is physically unable to be comfortable, then WTF would you force them to continue living in pain, distress or confusion?
I have a deal with one of my oldest friends to help with that (both ways) and if she is no longer around, I'll write it down (in case assisted suicide becomes legal) and definitely find someone else with a similar mindset willing to help!!
