Dreaming - KTM 990 Duke vs Yamaha MT-10 ??

Post by Noggin »

Which would you pick? This is a full on dream - I'm not going ot be in a position to buy a big bike for a long time. But, having looked at a load yesterday, these are the top two at the moment (the SV650 fitted probably better, but I've had 20+ years of people saying, mostly seriously, that I should "get a nice SV650 instead of those huge great big dangerous litre bikes" that I cringe at the thought - except for track :D :D ).

The 990 is lovely to ride but needs actually Riding. I am told that the MT-10 has the R1 engine. The same person told me I 'had' to get the SP as the engine was far better, would be nice but it's more expensive!!

I love the way the KTM feels to ride but I am a bit of an IL4 brat!! LOL I prefer to ride them like a twin but it's nice that they can be ridden lazily. I doubt a 990 would like that much!!

I suspect there's a place for both if the garage/purse was big enough

But, which would you choose if you had to and why??

There's 40bhp difference and the CP4 sounds like a twin anyway. MT-10 for me!

I'd go for one of the end of line priced KTM Duke 890R - ISTR they were being knocked out for under £10K. Fully adjustable suspenders F/R and 166kg with 5 litres of fuel in the tank.

I was going to chip in on the MT10 side of the fence, in this colour, but it does the only 1 light on for main beam, which is way wonky and just wrong.

I like them both, but the Yam would be my choice if I was pushed. They are both fun bikes.

MT10 for me. Can't see how an SP would have a better engine? Isn't the SP just upgraded suspension with the same engine.

My neighbour's son has an SP,same donkey as the cooking version, but better suspenders.

The one I've ridden (probably not an R) is seriously top heavy. Freaked me out when I realised because my BB was beautiful to ride and I never felt like it was top heavy! Maybe to get the upright riding position meant they moved everything around? Or, the R is not top heavy!! LOL

I'm really wary about them - like I said elsewhere, I disliked the 690 so much that I would be very wary until I get a test ride on an 890 or 790!!

But - I can't see the headlights when I'm on it, and when I'm not, they aren't on (mostly)

And I do so love the colour of those wheels :D :D :D

Maybe I misunderstood. I'm certain-sure he said the engine was better, tuned up or something. But, I doubt I'll ever be able to get the SP and also doubt I'd ever be able to ride it hard enough to care about fancy-doo-dah sozzies!! LOL But, if that lotto win comes up, I'll get the SP & the 990 to put next to the Panigale!! (Not gonna ride the Ducati, just need it in the garage to share the photo every time KFB mentions Panigales!!

That would 100% be my plan!! Might need to see the physio more to ride the bike 8 times a week, but I'd give it a go!!

This is really pie in the sky, and the ideal would be both!! I do so need to get a test ride on an MT10 now to compare

A 690 has nothing at all in common with the 790/890 apart from some orange

I had the very first MT-10 and it was fun; it was also my first naked bike, previous to that I had sports bikes. I loved my MT, apart from, and tank range (100 miles, no matter how you rode - that may have changed). and the seat, including the comfort seat. Both are like sitting on a plank, and having sat on the MT-10 at the NEC last year, nothing has changed.

I'd look at the 990 before another MT-10. Yes the MT has 150 bhp+, but in the real world you rarely use that, if fo no other reason that the wind blast stops you. I'd be looking at how the torque of both bikes feels at real world speeds, and without having to change down a few gears.

Must admit, I stuck to the 990 Vs MT question. But noise apart the GSXS would so the same job for a fair bit cheaper. Stacks of IL4 midrange and easy to roll around at low revs/high gear in town, smooth, comfy and with 150-180+ mile tank range, decent finish as well.

Cool.. I'll go testing in the summer - hopefully! (Have to persuade a dealer I'm serious - I mean, I am, but not for another year or two!!)

TBF, I doubt I'll be able to do 100 miles before I have to stop for my arm/shoulder, so the MT tank/seat won't be a massive issue. I will have to stop anyway, so might as well stretch, fill and try and get comfortable on the seat again! LOL

I found the 390 seat like a plan, but I did get used to it after a while :D And I am a bit of a brat, I do like the idea of the big engine in the MT :D :D

I do need to ride both - the 990 again and not in a group of people. Need to ride it at my own pace for a bit. (Also need to learn the vocab for stuff about the quickshifter that was apparently on there!! I've never used one and couldn't ask about it!! LOL )

Well that's harsh!! I'm not perfect, so I reckon either bike and I would go together pretty well

Madam bloody would indeed!!  TBF, it doesn't look right for a TLs but it does look lovely

Although to be totally honest, Madam would much prefer a standard 1997 T1000s with no mods!!! (Well, maybe a new rear shock! And I might have to add bar risers now!!!) I am actually almost more sad about killing my TLs than I am about killing my shoulder.

I did so love that bike
