Different though isn't it, the bike isn't designed to protect your head and keep you alive in an impact, so it's built with completely different materials for a completley different purpose.

Re: Model of helmet??
@the_priest has, IIRC, posted about various parts of his Triumph disintegrating. Some of them were plastic.
But also, IIRC, they were fuel hose connectors, out of sight. Same with the helmet lining. A visual inspection won't inform you of internal degradation.
Legally, it's up to you what you wear as long as it met the standard in place when first sold. Those standards develop and evolve.
As always, don't fall off
Did you have newer helmets (subsequently disposed of) when riding your newer bikes in Dubai?

Re: Model of helmet??
Plastic bodywork is (for the most part) ABS. Helmets (for the most part) are fibreglass composites. Very different materials, despite both being 'plastic'. And fuel hose connectors are permanently in contact with volatile hydrocarbons. Helmets aren't.Horse wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:06 pm @the_priest has, IIRC, posted about various parts of his Triumph disintegrating. Some of them were plastic.

Re: Model of helmet??
The rule of thumb I apply is that when the helmet lining becomes compressed to the point that it's no longer a snug fit, it's time to dispose of it. If at any time before that the shell starts to display even the slightest cracking or crazing, get rid immediately. And if despite all that it gets to around 15 years old, get rid anyway.

Store your helmet next to a petrol can, or something else evaporating solvents, and that might have a damaging effect on the impact absorbing liner. Especially if over a much longer time. It's not just about the shell material.
I really don't know.

Like I said, SHARP was developed in 2007, testing from 2008.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:24 pm if despite all that it gets to around 15 years old, get rid anyway.
ECE22-06 is now roughly equivalent (although rotational is new, there may be other differences).
Are your 14 y.o. lids listed on SHARP?

Re: Model of helmet??
@weeksy
I have never really understood the MIPS being the answer to everything ( and early MIPS seemed to be weakly adhered to helmets anyway)
I feel that if you are relying on MIPS to save you, then most of the rest of you life you will be fed through a tube , if you survive.
MIPS type systems in motorcycle helmets - is there anywhere I can go for data, as my marketing background suggests that it is a really good way of building in obsolescence.
Anyone know when the new rotational stuff is at its most effective? Crashes from 50mph, 70 mph, 90 mph?
And if it is the new standard, why are Arai and Shoei not making helmets to the new std?https://www.infinitymotorcycles.com/new ... know-about

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=shoei ... nt=gws-wizNow, ECE 22.06 doesn’t actually come into effect until January 2024, so until then helmets that meet the outgoing 22.05 are still legal for sale.

MCN note:
Production under 22.05 certification ceased in July 2023 and manufacturers were given until January 4, 2024 to clear remaining stock. Retailers, however, are free to sell 22.05 helmets until their own stock is exhausted, and with that in mind there are bargains to be had.

Re: Model of helmet??
Well, I said hi to LOADS of big beards blokes and none said - ah, your Horses mate, how’s it going?
Well, I bought it in 2016. But even that makes it 8 years old
However, I virtually never used it because I preferred the Arai, and then the other Shoei. So it lived the first year mainly in a cupboard
Since 2017, on the few occasions that I’ve ridden, I’ve mostly used the Arai because it has a dark visor
Mind you, the Shoei is still younger than the Arai and hasn’t been ’tapped’ on the back in an off at Portimao like the Arai has!!!
I haven’t been able to afford like for like replacements for the last few years and both helmets were upper end on the helmet scale (not top, I know!) when I bought them, so I figure that, now I’m riding a LOT slower and a LOT less, I will keep these two for probably another summer. Once I’m riding more and faster and possibly on track again, I will reassess all my kit - but the helmets first for sure
But, didn’t find anyone that wanted to sell me a visor today, so will go online
