No more Chrome

Post by kendo57 »

I have read that Chrome is to be banned from motor vehicles in 2024, health and safety.
Royal Enfield's are covered in chrome ,Harleys and the like . Makes me wonder what alternatives
they might come up with .

Chrome is an anachronism and largely belongs to a bygone age. It's also a process that involves deeply toxic chemicals and processes. The only component that still regularly uses chrome is fork tubes - what alternative will take over from chrome in that job? For pretty much everything else (as Skub says) polished stainless is a superior alternative.

Yebbut, doesn't that need to be flashed onto a base layer of chrome?

Not necessarily.

Chrome (and indeed, fake chrome  ) also has a big carbon foot print, which is a major reason you get so many dechromed shadowline/night edition/black pack/not-at-all-shiney car trim lines.

Pretty sure I read that Dacia have officially binned chrome.

Loads of "chrome" is nothing of the kind anyway, it's stainless steel, nickel or metallised plastic.

Chrome does look nice though TBF, on the right sort of bike. The Bonnie has real "full toxic" chrome plating, probably the only vehicle I've owned where that's genuinely the case. When you polish it up it has a depth and lustre that alternatives just don't replicate.

Shame it gives children 6 fingers and fish 2 heads really :(

When I used to print, we used a chrome roller as it is hydroscopic and attracted water to keep the paper dry. So 60/70s manufacturers were actively encouraging cars to rot by punching holes in bodywork the covering them with chrome strips!

I get stuff chromed all the time at work. "Hard Chrome" isn't typically mirror shiny like a bumper, but it's possible. Loads of reasons to get stuff chrome plates beyond aesthetics.

I'll suspect you'll be able to get old stuff re-chromed for a long time yet.

Shotgunners will hope so. Since lead shot got replaced with steel hard chrome inside the barrel is a must.

The only things I've had chrome plated for as far back as I can remember is the grab rail on the LC and the fork legs on the VFR. I've had loads of other stuff plated, but my go-to is Electroless Nickel plating; it has a 'warm' finish reminiscent of stainless, has excellent lubricity (I like that word) and has excellent anti-corrosion properties. There's also a place that does it only a mile or so away from me. Unless it's an application like fork legs, which do need hard chrome plating, I'd happily switch to EN for everything else.

Gilles Vidal from Renault hopes manufacturers will embrace more sustainable alternatives. Examples include using slate and cork finishes. Sounds like he's describing Fred Flintstone's wheels (or should that be rollers?)
