Have we just given up with IT and Electronics now?

Post by Greenman »

Small rant alert.

Tv's, PC's, IT services, sky, virgin, apple, microsoft, HP, they are all fucking useless.

Have all the big businesses and manufacturers ganged together to produce products and service the public in the worst way possible lately or is it just me?

I have new HP products that don't work with Epson products, fail to stream Zoom meetings due to crap wireless card etc, HP say 'oh well tuff for you' after logging a call and have closed it as i did not respond to them within 2 days! - Never had/or indeed have these issues with older HP laptops.

I have a brand new Sony TV at home. After turning on i have to wait for 3 minutes before being able to use any buttons on the remote. It also crashes on app's (any app) numerous times a day, never had this issue with my old TV.

Samsung S10 - Almost every time i pick it up it moans about some accidental unlock and i have to fight with 2 or 3 screens to unlock the thing. Also now have poor reception at home address - Never used to happen with the S9!

Rang Sky yesterday who have been crediting my account for 8 months on my old address for a package i no longer use. Their switchboard makes it so hard to get to speak to anyone without an active account, so i had to go through to sales 'they pick up within second of course' and demand i am put through to someone who i can speak to, no, back to main switchboard and around in circles. Can i email Sky, no, no email address at all! They owe me £500 odd quid!

Dito above when trying to pay a bill to Npower, in the end they rang me asking to pay and i sent the money, no way i could get past their switchboard robot without an account number.

I tried to sign up for a Tesco Clubcard, i enter all details and click submit, "oh no something went wrong, please try again later'.

Tried logging into HMRC portal, 'oh no something went wrong, please try again later'.

What the fuck is going on!

If they are crediting your account, wtf are you calling them? Just take the money.

Didn't you have your own business? Of course, if you don't understand the difference between credit and debit you're probably better off as an employed person.

I have the exact opposite opinion, all my PC's and Macs work fine, my Iphone is rock solid, my LG TV is brilliant and I love Sky.

I love Apple stuff. Everything syncs flawlessly. iMessages pop up on everything and everything works at the same sped as when it was taken out of the box. Plus Macs seem to work much better with Adobe products. Since our IT dept moved me to a windows machines i've had nothing but problems and an PC that is grinding slowly to a halt. Utter shite. I know have a Chromebook as I broke the screen on my macbook and have yet to repair it. The Chrome book shames my MS Surface piece of shit.

That's interesting.
My daughter uses the Adobe suite all day @ uni on Macs and then comes home to work on here own gear, but when given the option for a home computer went Windows and would not entertain the idea of an Apple unit

Its very rare to walk into a photographic/design studio environment and find windows machines? It appears to be a very much a Mac dominated area. Of course there are people who use windows PCs, but almost all the ones i've met that have them is due to a IT policy rather than individual choice.

When I lost my mac to an IT policy, it was only surrendered on the promise of a better spec'ed windows PC. My workflow normally sees Lightroom and Bridge open and sometimes I'll also need to edit raw files in photoshop. If I do, the w10 PC really struggles notably and demonstrably against the mac when doing this. Our IT guys haven't answered why, but I remember someone saying, or reading somewhere, its due to the way adobe CC hosts its cache locally and how OSX and a PC accesses it that causes the issues? Never had that confirmed or denied though?

TBH my brand loyalty isn't really there, I just favour things that work well and for me Apple stuff does, both personally and professionally.

It's equally rare (unheard of IME) to find Macs being used for things like CFD and FEA. I.e. technical simulation stuff doing a lot of maths.

I have no idea if there's a technical reason that PCs should be better at one and Macs at the other, but I do suspect there's a reason Mac make their cases look nice. ;)

Gotta say, I've not had IT "issues" for a long time. Computers are way better than they used to be IMO.

I bought a Mac because I use Logic Pro X,which is Apple based software. Mine was bought reconditioned from Apple and does what it says on the tin. That aside,I don't mind a PC either,I use Mrs.Skub's sometimes. It works well too.

Apple stuff is way overpriced,I don't like that part.

I'll probably have all kinds of gremlins now.

When I worked in IT we had Dell systems. Previously I used HP for servers as well. At home I have a Dell Precision T1700 desktop with a XEON CPU and enough RAM and SDD's, 4k 32" screen. Works for me. I now have an IPhone as insurance finally gave us one and I had already replaced the daughters phone for her... Such is life. Phone works fine, IPad does not load various bits of software because it is too old. No real issues though, I look after my stuff and just have reasonable expectations.

I fucking hate my Sony TV for that very reason. It's probably 3 years old now but it was top of the line when I bought it. Great picture, but the interface is so slow. Even after the initial 'warm up' it continues to be a nightmare to use. Even just changing the channels is a pain, I push the button and wait and wait and then think "Did it register the button push?" so I push again, and it changes channel, then changes channel again.

Even the volume change has about a 5 second delay before it does something, by which time you've well overshot the mark you were aiming for.

It's a 'smart' TV so when I turn it on it goes through the rigmarole of telling me it's not connected to the internet, then it tells me it is connected to the internet, then when I start Netflix it tells me it's no longer connected to the internet and I have to go through the process of putting in all the router details again.

My LG TV is fantastic. Comes on almost instantly. Reacts instantly to button presses. If it does become disconnected from the internet, I just hit reconnect and it does it without fuss, that only happens when there is a problem at the router or ISP too.

Fuck Sony TVs. I'll never buy another one.

I sent my Samsung TV back for similar reasons and swapped it for a Sony which has been faultless :D

I bought a Sony OLED last year, cost a pretty penny.

It would periodically crash, very frustrating.

Then it found some new firmware and it's been faultless since.
