So it's true that you might expect to be dealing with 'nasty' situations, but since that's so obvious it should also be obvious that The Management need to have a support system in place to help people out afterwards.

Is there? I don't know! Just saying.
In this case there was a fair bit of 'not having been provided with the equipment to deal with' in a situation where just about all the safety systems hadn't been maintained and 'the management' was giving out fatal guidance which made the job more dangerous.

All military bandsmen are also medical staff when push comes to shove. Even in WW1 bandsman were stretcher bearers.
Every musician joining the military should be aware of that before they join.

The military is full of people doing things they didn't sign up for. A very good friend was an engines and airframes tech in the air force, his bit on the side was cleaning up after plane crashes. He was on duty for Lockerbie and again for Kegworth a couple of months later. Having dealt with a few hundred corpses in the space of two months he left.

Another mate was an RAF bandsman, Gulf war kicks off and they're all out there on the ground as battlefield medics. He has Gulf War Syndrome and has had some highly unusual cancers.
A mate of mine was RAF. almost the first thing he was sent to was the clear up after Lockerbie - at 18. Massive effect on the rest of his life.

But I don't think there is anything that can prepare a person for most of the dangerous stuff in that sort of job, military or emergency services :( :(

A sensible driver might forgo the £50m salary and get them to spend that on the car instead
They aren't allowed to. The budget cap foe the car is set at something like $140m and I'm sure Merc can easily blow through that if they were so inclined. Driver's salaries aren't included in the cap so they can pay them whatever they like. I wonder if there will ever be a time when the driver cost more than the car

Indeed, but there are budget caps and there are budget caps :D

Despite the fact Red Bull (I think?) were fined for exceeding the cap there are definitely lots of ways around it. Red Bull are actually at something of a disadvantage 'cause they don't really make road cars, whereas Ferrari and Mercedes can both legitimately claim all that engine R&D etc. they do isn't for F1. It's even true, to a certain extent!

I have personally been on site at an F1 team running tests during the "summer shutdown" when nobody is supposed to be working

And nobody sees it as a problem.

An old friend of mine got commissioned at the end of his 22 and ended up as PSAO* of a TA Regt in Liverpool. He was a great guy, the youngest RSM in the RCT and later on, a Master Driver as I was. He was a genuinely good soldier and in no way a bullshitter. It always amazed him that his career had been so stellar.

As a Captain, he was seen as a safe pair of hands for knocking on peoples' doors and telling them their son/daughter had been killed or seriously injured in Iraq, Afghanistan or anywhere else. Eventually it got to him and he had to retire. He,s on medication, has regular therapy sessions and goes to Crete a few times a year - to his 'safe place'. The diagnosis is the ubiquitous PTSD.

I doubt he'll get better. He has an open invitation to come to mine but I doubt he will, he can't do new places. It makes me sad and angry.
And the lesson is.................

Wars, including terrorist wars, are horrible things and all sorts of people get hurt, not just the ones with blast or bullet wounds. Let's stop having wars.

I should have thought anyone joining the "armed forces" must realise they could end up in a combat zone?

Colonel: Watkins, why did you join the army?
Watkins: For the water-skiing and the travel, sir. Not for the killing, sir. I asked them to put it on my form, sir: "no killing".
Monty Python, of course. :D

Soldier, nerves shattered, runs from the front line.

*Loud voice* 'Where do you think you're going soldier?'
*Soldier* 'Sorry Major, my nerve went'
*Loud voice* 'Major? Major?! I'm a General!'
*Soldier* 'Sorry sir, I didn't realise I'd run that far.

As a British citizen in the USAF the only places they could deploy me overseas was to the UK or Hawaii. One day I was questioned by an officer..
You're still a British Citizen?
Yes.
It could be a problem ( goes on to explain where they can deploy me etc)
So you're saying if there's a war, I can't go?
Yes
What's the downside?
...I stand there & listen to a 10 minute tirade.

FFWD a couple of weeks & I bump into him again. He apologized! Confessed he started shouting before thinking & later thought my answer was hilarious.

Space A flights from Travis to Mildenhall for $10 each way was certainly a factor...

Rumours are that he will buy a stake in Man Utd.

You're conveniently ignoring the WC he won with McLaren and the six he won with Merc.

He's been with Merc over 10 years and has only driven 2 manufacturer's cars in his whole F1 career.

But we get it - you don't like him.
