Re: In todays news...
This one amused me. Young bloke at the airport waiting for his holiday flight sends his mates a Snapchat message that he's in the Taliban and is going to blow up the plane. Somewhere between Gatwick and Menorca a couple of Spanish F18's show up to escort the plane. The message had been picked up by "British Intelligence" and passed to the Spanish. He was in a Spanish court because the Spanish Air Force wanted their £100k back for running the F18's. He was lucky enough to get acquitted.

Piss poor reporting. There's no F18. It's an F/A-18.... and the export Spanish model is the EF-18!Pirahna wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 10:45 pm This one amused me. Rishi bans disposable vapes. So what are the "cool" kids going to do now? They'll smoke real cigarettes, of course.
Watch the teenage smoking rate start to increase once the ban takes effect. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Perhaps it will reduce the number of next generation potential vapers who would otherwise become nicotine junkies and at the same time potentially damage their lungs. So perhaps not so stupid.

Re: In todays news...
I have a mate who is obsessed with snuss and snuff. He always brings some around when we are doing production.gremlin wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 4:16 pm My Swedish friends use snuss. Almost all use the pouches, but one old school Swede still uses loose snuss. Again, there's a bit of a ritual: lid comes off the little pot, the grains are arefully pinched and selected to get the right quantity, it's then squeezed into a little baguette shape, inserted under the left upper lip followed by a few tongue contortions to get it into the requisite position.
After about five minutes a small blob of brown spittle appears in the corner of the lips.
I've tried it a few times, it's not my bag.
Horrible stuff, but then i have never liked tobacco.
I always wind him up saying "if you snuss you lose" or "i think you've had a snuff of that now"!

Re: In todays news...
I'm not sure they will. Most people know how damaging smoking is now and will avoid it as much as possible, it is also not seen as 'cool' to smoke any more so that factor which no doubt influenced a lot in the earlier decades is now gone.
They will all just start blazing pure weed, in pipes and bongs, hopefully, nothing wrong with that at all...

Re: In todays news...
Vaping is a substitute for smoking. Some/many/most of those potential vapers will smoke cigarettes, which, according to PHE is much more dangerous. But maybe that's what Rishi wants.

Vaping is a rapidly increasing trend in primary schools and amongst younger children in secondary schools, where such children are unlikely to be vaping as a smoking substitute.Saga Lout wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:09 amVaping is a substitute for smoking. Re: In todays news...
All they need to do is add a quick poison to the slow nicotine poison and hey presto, all those filthy smokers stinking the place out and bed blocking the NHS with clogged up lungs will be no more.
Good idea.

Or, those joke 'exploding cigarettes' could be made a bit more lethal.
Granted there could be a bit of collateral damage, but smokers tend congregate in herds anyway.

Re: In todays news...
I stopped smoking six months ago (at least I hope I've stopped) and am just gradually joining the ranks of those who think it smells foul. Get me! One of the miserable self-righteous!
None of my kids smoke - the general uncoolness, health issues and expense makes it a no-brainer. Vaping is for chavs innit? A whole generation of underclass waiting for the first long-term vaping health scare. Dystopian.

Eeh, you libertarian lot.
Ban this, ban that....because I don't do it. It's marv that you all worry about other people's health so I expect you'll all join me in clamouring for a ban on alcohol.

Re: In todays news...
Chucking used vapes away on the street is already illegal/unlawful, but that doesn't seem to matter. So ban 'em at source is the next best step
It's also already illegal to ride an overly loud, overly on fire, underinsured, overly polluting motorcycle in an overly fast manner, so the "lets hope they don't ban bikes!" argument always falls a bit flat for me.

The bit that really got me wasn't that the police arrested and abused an assault victim (no surprise), it's that so many of them ganged up on the one good copper who blew the whistle. It must have taken many of them at different ranks to hound him out of the force, that's a lot of bent coppers.Police officers mock body-worn video of semi-naked woman

I don't mean to be dismissive of our fire fighters, but surely when you sign up it's in the full knowledge that you will need to attend to some pretty gruesome call outs.
Why then are they suing for compo for attending a fire?

Are the LAS and coppers in on this one? If not they're missing out.
