Extended warranties, what a can of worms!

A mate of mine bought a s/h bike off a dealer and got talked into an extended warranty.
Anyway, my mate puts the bike away for the winter, and is giving it a good clean down, fairing off etc and discovers that the rear of the radiator is corroded to hell and the paint is flaking off the rest of it.
He goes to see the dealer and.............yep, you guessed it, not covered by the EW.
Basically, anything THEY determine to be fair wear and tear is tough shit for the owner.
If I were him, I'd be asking for my £350 back (which would pay for a pattern rad ) as it would seem he's got a chocolate teapot.

Even if it was covered by the warranty, why would they replace just because it looks shit?

My attitude to extended warranties is that if they're selling me a decent bike it shouldn't need a extended warranty.
Pay your money,take your chance.

A good point, well made. However it is about to be pressure tested to be sure.

If I was buying anything other than Japanese I'd take all the insurance I could get,but it's still going to be cover for major components,engine/gearbox.

Read the terms of the warranty when it’s offered. They’re poor value in my opinion unless you’re very risk averse but they won’t be ambiguous about what’s covered.

I don't think you can sign away your statutory rights. However I do think they are a mechanism to extract more money from a buyer for very little benefit.

I agree. But if you sign up to a warranty with a list of exclusions, it's easy for a trader to point at that list if something goes wrong. Even if it would have been covered by statutory rights. And that might be enough to put some people off taking it further.

Don’t insure things that you can afford to repair or replace. They are in business to make a profit.
