Twice in five years, what an imposition.

Democracy must have one of the lowest baud rates in the universe.
Why go to the polls twice when going once will suffice?
I quite agree. Vote when you're 18 and never vote again. That's the way to do it.

If you can't be bothered to vote twice in five years you deserve the government you get.
Is going to the polls twice instead of only the necessary once required by self professed pedagogues such as yourself? Perhaps going to the polls three times would be even more democraticer? ;)

Cousin Jack wrote: Mon Jan 15, 2024 6:15 pm All I want from MPs or members of the H of L is that they examine the data, and use logic to arrive at a sensible solution. Sadly many don't, for all sorts of reasons.

However Bishops have a very visible history of objecting to some Bills on religious grounds. I would exclude them for that reason, many others are just as bad but far less visible.
So you'd throw out any practising Catholics of course. The observant Jews and Muslims would have to go obvs.

You continue to miss the point. Those 'religious grounds' are shared by a fair slab of the populus. You don't agree with them, that's fine, but that doesn't mean either a) that they should be silenced b) should be unrepresented. Should they be thrown out of the Lower House too? The legislative bodies aren't there to do just what YOU think is logical. You have a vote, I have a vote and so does everyone else, yours counts for no more than any other - unfortunately none of them directly affect the selection of the Upper House....which is more of a problem than your issue with deities.
Religion should have no say in politics. As you say decisions should be made based on facts and reliable data not fiction.

There is no way of having members that represent every persons personal beliefs, it's just not possible. If you use that model then once again we shall have a cabinet made up of people who are just there to tick a box rather then people who are there to make positive changes.

Will we have trans people there representing the trans society? will we have flat earth believers there sticking up for the flat earthers? Do we need cats there making decisions for those who identify as cats? Where would it stop?

IMO also religion is part of the current problem, the religous leaders are all just as corrupt as the politicians have become and need to expelled from the HoL for us to see positive change in our democratic system - if we even have one anymore.

Is it? You mentioned heart attacks, if I have one I don't want to be resucitated, it'd in my notes, |I've an advanced directive, my spouse and spawn know my views. If a doctor, or any health worker decided that their god want s me to live then tough on them, do as you are told.

I had a heart attack in 2006. I didn't need resuscitation and it wasn't determined that I'd actually had a heart attack until later in the day and quite some time after I'd been stabilised.

I subsequently had a triple bypass op as it was clear I'd have another ha that would kill me. The op sorted me out and I'm grateful for my wife calling an ambulance, the initial care and the later medical intervention.

I'm happy for you that you have made it plain you don't want to be resuscitated but you're being a bit silly in not making it plain you don't want any medical assistance in any circumstances. It's not just heart attacks that may cause a need for resuscitation.

Why don't you just stop breathing now and save everyone having to make unpopular (for you) decisions?

That was a bad pregnancy IIRC, the woman needed an abortion to save her life but as it was illegal at the time, she and the child both died.

So is my old man at 88 but i don't think he should be dead!

Stick around for a bit longer. Surely just go down the pub and become an alchi, better than being dead!

Just for us emigrants. If you've been gone from the UK for over 15 years they've made it possible to vote in the upcoming election. Register here https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/ ... -elections

Yeah, I saw that. Don't necessarily agree with it.

I don't agree with it really. I kinda get it if you're still a UK subject, but I think residency should play into it.

Oh, I dunno. Everyone should have a vote somewhere and I guess lots of expats can't vote in their new locations. So residency shouldn't be the key. If you're a British passport holder (NOT dual nationality) and either pay your taxes here/own property here (that attracts local taxes etc) and/or are in receipt of a state/occupational pension you have an interest in who runs the place so should have a vote.

I'm not sure it's wise to tinker too much with "who is allowed to vote", if we can then we quite quickly get into excluding folk for being too poor, too stupid, too old, too ugly even. (I fail on all those by the way! ;) )
