Much easier to convert now to a proper road going bike, LED lights and lithium batteries, bicycle speedo or GPS, and no 2T oil to carry.

Depends what you want, if you're going to only ride it for 20 minutes and can live with the maintenance I think they're great.

I'd like to say a fourbanger would be more reliable than a smoker, but I've a sneaky feeling that although you'd have to rebuild a 2t twice as often it would be a lot cheaper to do so.

The suspension will be way too soft.
You won't have a stand, so always need to find a wall.
No ignition used to freak me out.

We all have 2 stroke enduro bikes and never had any engine problems.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 7:55 am I'd like to say a fourbanger would be more reliable than a smoker, but I've a sneaky feeling that although you'd have to rebuild a 2t twice as often it would be a lot cheaper to do so.
We all use Motul 2 stroke oil.

That's because you don't ride it fast enough to do any engine wear.Yorick wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 9:41 amWe all have 2 stroke enduro bikes and never had any engine problems.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 7:55 am I'd like to say a fourbanger would be more reliable than a smoker, but I've a sneaky feeling that although you'd have to rebuild a 2t twice as often it would be a lot cheaper to do so.

A bit more seriously, both 2 stroke and 4 stroke mx bikes need regular top end rebuilds, how often is defined by the manufacturer, a 4 stroke top end rebuild costs a lot more than a 2 stroke one as you need a cam chain in addition to the gaskets, piston and rings, but cam chains aren't as expensive as a piston and rings. Supermotos need more maintenance than MX bikes because they're flat out a lot more, they're harder on valves but the cam chain usually has an easier time in a supermoto as the engine speed is more constant.

With a 450 supermoto on the road you'll be flat out a lot, it's why the engines don't last, the only MX bike I had that I could ride anywhere near it's limits was a YZ125, with a 250 I felt like I was tootling round in the mid range.

Do proper competition motocross bikes make good supermoto bikes on the road?
A quick google throws up something like this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134880435987 ... p_homepage
It might then also be a good base for a GP45 style bike?
My CRF 450 was wicked, I bought it off Lawman for the place before here. I road reg'd it, bought all wheels and bit and watched my uncle fit most of it, took it to some place in Southampton to have a lighting kit fitted, was wank but did the job, rode it loads, loved it, took it from SW20 to Stonehenge and back in 1 day, it shit its self at Tolworth on the way home.
it was rough but loads of fun.

Buddy has a "road legal" Honda CR500 stroker... It hasn't been motarded & still runs pukka MX tires etc.

I had a lowly Kawasaki 220R on non-road legal MX tyres, it was fucking hilarious on the road when it was wet. I imagine a 500 is like that in the dry!

We rarely go on the road, but there's a couple of twisty road climbs we need to go up/down occasionally.
The lads are better than me enduro, but I clear off on the tarmac bits.
Can feel the front tyre really squirming and great fun, but takes the edges off the tyre.

Back in the VD days someone had a CR500 motard, I'd like to say it was Whysub but I really can't remember. I did meet a few of motard people at the White Hart in Puckeridge, the CR500 was there.
