Well that’s not going too speedily - I suppose it’s a bit too early for spring flowers. How about a change to something more immediate: your bike with floods?

There's a Nissen hut about 2 miles from my house (there's probably one closer if I could be arsed to look) but it's too cold and salty for motorcycles.

Re: The riding challenge game. Pic of your bike 'somewhere'
I went out today as I hadn’t ridden in a while as I had been commuting by car to the city and back so had a look on here to see what was the latest and ended up riding around for an hour and a half
And failed miserably
Best I could find was 1 of a hundred wriggly tin roofed farm shed
This was my back up plan lol
Not claiming a success for either pic but gave me an excuse to get my arse out on the bike and enjoyed riding round up and down country lanes

Re: The riding challenge game. Pic of your bike 'somewhere'
There can't be many Nissen huts left standing - although 'hut' is a bit of a misnomer really. When I was a kid we had what was almost an estate of them with families in. I assume it had been a barracks and had been repurposed 'temporarily' as housing. We had 'prefabs' too, they were supposed to be short term too but people were in them for years and years. (I think it was asbestos in their construction that eventually resulted in their demise.
Good luck with finding a genuine one....although military museums/old air bases etc might be a good place to look.

There's the abandoned remains of a WW2 air base in overgrown woods that's just full of them over the border in Shropshire. Chances of me going over there on a bike in the very near future, however....Count Steer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 5:05 pm Good luck with finding a genuine one....although military museums/old air bases etc might be a good place to look.

I did have a look at an old grass airstrip a few miles away as there used to be a couple there but all torn down now and replaced by modern versions of a wriggly tin roof building. Even some pre war estates and parts near the port where they used to be have all been replacedCount Steer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 5:05 pm

Yeah, once the corrugated iron has gone they take about 5 minutes to level. They were surprisingly comfy once the roof was insulated though. There's an area in woods near Caterham where you can see where the foundations remain but not a sausage of anything else.Bigyin wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 5:18 pmI did have a look at an old grass airstrip a few miles away as there used to be a couple there but all torn down now and replaced by modern versions of a wriggly tin roof building. I wouldnt have called them comfortable from past experience ...this was Drip Bridge barracks near Stirling in the mid 80's when i was in basic. Only reason we managed to sleep was being completely knackered all the timeCount Steer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 7:24 pm

There's plenty of them left, mostly on, or near WWII airfields.

Okay lets change this, next to a Tudor beamed property, but not one of those mock Tudor executive houses!

I've never been so close to running out of fuel as I was at that spot. Spent the last 10k trying to think of how I could spin the pleasures of sleeping by the roadside to Mrs W. Lesson to all: NZ has big distances between fuel stations, and they close at 5 or 6 pm.....
Different point: that's a UK bike - did you ride it there, or ship it?

I’m with a mate who has done the Camper Van tour 10 years previously. So he knew what to expect.Wossname wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 6:02 pmI've never been so close to running out of fuel as I was at that spot. I personally try to fill up at my convenience, usually half a tank full whether I need to or not.
10 minutes after that photo someone up there ^ opened the Taps. It was like riding through a Carwash but with extra wind.
Didn’t make it to our intended destination and bailed out at Darfield at got us a Room for the night.
Yes. Shipped from Tilbury to Auckland. About 10 weeks.

I don’t know if you’ve been to the Sounds area yet, but we have (/had from lots of years ago) a wonderful b and b contact in Te Anau, with several bikes including a Black Prince…
Let me know if you’re interested.

Loved NZ. In 1995 I spent 7 weeks riding around the South Island, and one week in the North. Even a rented Suzuki VX800 could not detract from the beauty of the country.
