If you don't move the key for more than a certain amount of time (something like 30s) it goes to sleep and stops transmitting/receiving, it wakes up again on moving. If you don't move it for a long time (sorta overnight) it goes into deep sleep and only wakes up when you push the button.
I get caught out by that sometimes, I walk up to the car and it won't let me in. It takes me a sec to remember why.
