I never hated work. I sometimes really enjoyed my job(s) and sometimes hated them. Even in the same company things change, especially when they expect you to do your stuff in a different sector or if they 'restructure'
As said before, I didn't intend to retire, I just quit intending to get back in the saddle, probably freelance/contract. (First offer was in Health....which was one of the reasons I quit
My comfort zone was energy/utilities/oil etc).
(Some time earlier I'd taken 3 months - unpaid - bereavement leave and, despite the circumstances, found it a bit of a battery recharge but the side effect was I had no fear of just walking away without another job lined up. I wasn't bored and didn't feel 'reduced' by not working. I was fortunate though, I could survive pretty well without the income - no mortgage etc).
I just planned and did all those things I'd wanted to do and never had time. That kept the first few years busy.
