Apparently it’s still a thing. I gave up a few years ago. No point making resolutions for fitness/riding bikes if you don’t know what physical abilities you’ll have!!

The only one I sort of make is more of a ‘try’ than a resolution. I try and get out on the mountain as early as possible on the 1st Jan and maybe see the sun rise (if it’s not cloudy etc).

The weather doesn’t look great for tomorrow, but if it’s not snowing or the clouds aren’t too low at about 9pm tomorrow there’s a couple of us going to walk up and see in new year up high! If not, depending on Mondays morning’s weather I’ll walk up a bit on my own

For 2024 - I just plan to keep trying to be better, in lots of ways!!

Anything new you're about to embark on needs a start date and the beginning of a new year is a good one. I normally do dry January to clear out the festive excesses and will do that agin this year. I'm also combining that with an up in my exercising as I've not shifted the weight i put on during 6 years of varying disability due to bad knees. So I gues I am promising myself i'll be lighter and fitter by this time next year.

It's not a tradition I ever observed. There's not much I do to excess anyway,so no real 'mending of the ways' plan.

I knocked drinking on the head about 3 years ago,so I don't even have that to give up.

I'm pretty sure Mrs.Skub could point out many areas of personal improvement,but I'm not volunteering for that one.

Never declare them, as I find NY unspeakably depressing for some reason (always have) and to set goals that I might fail on always seemed an unnecessary additional burden. And I hate being reminded of many failings.

However last year I accidentally achieved three things that had been nagging at me for a while (getting to bed earlier; stopped smoking; started running) which have made my life way better. So I'm encouraged to continue the trend - lowering booze intake and shifting some gut will help with the running progress, so these are high on the list. Also playing the guitar more appeals.

It's not really a resolution, just a rolling plan bringing in the idea that spring is on the way. Get rid of 'stuff', clear the garage, get the house sorted inc. finishing off the loft and decide if we're staying or going. It's a cyclical thing.

The other thing is to do a few 'workshops' with the missus to explain where all the ££s are....and how to get at them....PBs, AVC type pension funds, shares, ISAs etc etc etc. (Having seen the situation a few relatives have been in after their other half popped clogs. It's all very well handing off all this stuff to the interested, ie me....but if I fell under a bus she'd have no idea where it's all stashed. My SiL doesn't even know how to use a cash point (!) because 'he always looks after that sort of thing'. So 'er indoors is going to get a crash course in financial wizardry* ).

*If experience is anything to go by, she'll listen, soak it all up and be better at it than me

I've worked for the same company for rather a long time (long story short - various roles, numerous takeovers etc,) and some happy soul in HR/T&C decided it would be pleasant to formally mark a significant anniversary (as a small poster) totalled in years / months / weeks/ hours etc.

Fun eh? or weird.

I couldn't help correcting their lazy ignorance of leap years etcetera.

The problem with life insurance/assurance (and some other investments) has been the constant mergers/acquisitions of companies. I took out a small insurance policy with Endsleigh when I was a student (they were pretty much THE student insurance company). I've kept paying it (it's only £2/month). Obvs, since then we've moved about a bit but I gave up trying to notify them of address changes after the policy changed hands about 5 times. I only knew who currently has it because the direct debit changed. I had to write to them and they struggled to find the records....but they did and offered a cash-in but it's pretty cheap for the cover.

Had other fixed term assurance policies/endowments too but they seemed to keep track of things a bit better - and I made sure I advised them of address/bank changes so the payouts went smoothly.

I had stuff with egg too and when they folded stuff ended up in 3 different companies. Company pension fund managers keep changing too. Not a problem while the money's coming in but if I fell under the bus the missus is going to have to know how to make sure she keeps getting the 50% so needs to know who, what, where. (+ vice versa).

Shares can be a pain too. I had BG shares from the get go. They got split into 3 and the Transco bit kept changing hands. Sold them all...it was getting difficult to keep track! At least now it's all electronic...I've got a box of defunct paper shares in the loft.

To be worth really big money I'd have to die whilst employed, our insurance is genuinely spectacular, based on salary and local cost of living, so it's very good and Mrs Potter would be minted.
She's retired now (at fifty, life of Riley) so unfortunately she doesn't have the same coverage, otherwise I might chance the odd banana skin left lying around*

For any subsequent police enquiry in the event of Mrs Potter meeting her demise on an errant banana skin, this was a joke.

Yeah. The big about death in service benefits are what you have to do to get the money.

Well, we've just done Phase 1 of the 'get up to speed' session. The funniest bit was when I logged her into the ISA funds I'd set up for her and she saw the % gains. 'Why does that one - European Selected Opportunities iirc - say Gain 187%?!' Then I showed her the US fund.... She now thinks I'm the 'Sage of Omaha'.

(They've been there a while accumulating so it's not as spectacular as it sounds ).

She's OK at the general sort of stuff really having had a business account when self-employed it's just that I've been handling everything else - but if she turns up in a Purosangue I may have to have a rethink.
