Isle of Man Steam Racket - Fire and Re-Hire

Post by mangocrazy »

Not sure where to place this in the forum structure, but if this is the wrong place can mods please move to a more suitable location.

I've long been a critic of the Isle of Man Steam Racket due to their predatory pricing at TT and MGP times and also their general approach to (lack of) customer service. It now seems that they are attempting to fundamentally change the T&Cs of their on-ship staff and threaten them with fire and re-hire if they fail to agree to these changes. The protest petition is here if you wish to sign:

Without being rude, that's only 1 side of the story.

Stenaline did similar recently. When the ship ported they sacked all the staff and had agency workers all prepped to step in. The crew had no idea it was happening until it did and they were ordered to clear out their lockers and fuck off. A mate's daughter lost her job at that time.

Signed.

The Steam Packet are a bunch of cunts and so are the cunts that work for the bastards!

So, as already said, there may be two sides to the dispute.

When phoning them to book a crossing, I used to hang up if it wasn’t answered by a Northern Irish person. They were much more helpful in the Belfast office.

My mate worked in the Seacat office in Belfast, he hated the attitude of the IOM locals, they were known as Fraggles and the Island as Fraggle Rock.

A lot of my mates are truckers and they say since P&O fired the staff and rehired a load of foreign chaps, the whole outfit has become shambolic, trailers not chained properly in rough weather, trucks damaged, stuff like that.

Both sides are trying to appear to be the Reasonable Party, but it's clear that there are wide differences between their respective positions. The threat of fire and re-hire is conveniently not mentioned in the IoMSP's comments, nor the fact that they've refused to go to arbitration. While 7 weeks holiday sounds great, the prospect of spending 40% more time on board (and thereby 40% less time with friends and loved ones) sounds a great deal less so.

The ones in any kind of position of power seem to be arseholes - that's a sweeping statement I know, but it's my experience. I remember being berated by one of the IoMSP staff for having the temerity of taking a couple of bikes in my van to the IoM. His view was I should have paid for the van and the bikes - tosser.
