Ooh good call! (The 2006 film, not 2022's 'Fall'). It's been said they don't make films like it any more, and probably never will. It's excellent.demographic wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 8:36 pm Lots mentioned that I like but I'm surprised that Le Mans with Steve McQueen, Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman * and Papillon** haven't been mentioned yet.
Also...
Cinema Paradiso.
Malena (i kind of fell in lust with Monica Belucci watching that one).
The Fall. Odd film but just bear in mind its supposed to be inside the imagination of a kid and you'll be right.
*Dont forget Harry Dean Stanton singing.
**Both versions are good but personally I prefer the McQueen Hoffman version.

Christoph Waltz is ace in Django, but he's bloody brilliant in Inglorious Basterds.

'Dumplings' reminded me of the besterest ever food centred film - 'Tampopo' (a noodle Western, rather than a spaghetti one ).demographic wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 11:50 pm

Ooh...good call. I haven't watched it for years so it's probably time to (before the Merkins 'remake' it ). The American film 'The Ramen Girl' was a bit of a homage to 'Tampopo' - and wasn't actually awful.cheb wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 8:43 amHave you tried Babette's Feast?Count Steer wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 7:03 am

I think it was on yesterday. I was happy that it was the end of the Aaardman/Dreamworks collaboration though - and I think Aardman were too.

How was it? Read a review or two that were a bit meh about it.
I picked up a DVD of 'Under the Skin'* for 99p in Oxfam yesterday. Think I have a copy somewhere but at 99p it's less hassle than looking for it. It was a flop but I rather like it, it's a bit different.

Well, it's not a documentary or art house But it was entertainingCount Steer wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 7:59 amHow was it? Read a review or two that were a bit meh about it.
Loses a bit from the the first simply because the voices behind the characters aren't as strong (Mel Gibson as Rocky, etc).
As chickens don't have opposable thumbs, you'll need to suspend some disbelief
Spoilers: Mrs Tweedy is back and there's a brief cameo by Feathers McGraw at the end.

Just watched the best film I've ever seen.
The Last Full Measure.
A slow starter, but stick with it. A true story.
I was blubbing like I'd lost a 100€ note.
9/10

Re: Movie 'Classics'... What say you...
Not really a fan of Tarantino's movies. PF was okay, Dusk Till Dawn and IB were funny but not worth going back for a re-watch. Movies I can watch over and over again:
Layer Cake
Snatch
Face
Tinker Tailor (remake with Gary Oldman)
Major League
Spotlight
Bourne movies (except for Legacy)
The Departed
Heat
The Town
The Bank Job
Lucky Number Selvin
Inside Man
Towering Inferno
Usual Suspects
I usually listen to movies on long drives so prefer stuff that's dialogue 'heavy' and not just explosions/punches/gunshots.
