I have mixed feeling about the 900RS. I want to like the stock bike, but there's something intangibly wrong for me.

A friend had one and forked out for the Delkevic 4 into 4 like the original Z1 and it looked great, yet it didn't inspire that level of lust in me,that I'd really want to own one.

I'm not sold on the paintwork on this one, that aside it's a nice looking bike,yet.....

There are some very nice touches and I particularly like the wheels, but those side panels and seat are uncomfortably reminiscent of the latest XSR 900...

I should like the Z900RS, but I don't, the proportions are wrong, the tank is too wide and the swing arm is too long.

It needs to be 2in lower & 4in longer, like a proper Z1

I agree.
A fella at work has one and i keep looking at it trying to work out why they get criticised as being out of proportion etc....

My memory of the original Z900 is that it had quite a narrow tank, you could get the plugs out of 1 and 4 without taking the tank off, the current Z900RS splays your knees very wide and the tank looks wide.

Probably a case that I didn't pay much attention to such bikes back in the day - perhaps if I did compare both side-by-side then I'd see what you mean?
It's only the last 5 years or so that I've looked towards retro styled bikes and like what I see......

Every time I've been on one I've not been able to get over the bulbous tank (not literally). I mean, look at it:

Compare to the original:

You're right, not a fair comparison. I only posted it because I saw the older one on eBay & it made me compare it with the harley-fat-bob number on the RS.

I think the fuel tank on my Honda is just as wide, but has knee cut outs which make it comfortable, Honda were luckier with the old bike they used for inspiration for mine, the CB1100R had a tank shape that can be made to fit a modern bike better, a spine frame probably helps a lot as well.

You could get all 4 plugs out without removing the tank.

Park one next to a Z1 & you'll see it.

I had a look at one today, the tank is that wide to go over the frame, the frame is that wide because it goes round the fuel injection.
