Armour - to change or not to change?

Post by Sunny »

Is it still sensible to switch out the standard armour that comes in bike gear?

Most of my gear is the best part of twenty years old now, give or take  , so I've been having a splurge recently and buying new stuff.

That includes Spidi textile trousers and Spidi 2-piece leathers - and I noticed while trying the jacket on yesterday that the elbow armour feels quite solid.

I put Hiprotec flexible armour into my old textiles (I see there's stuff like D30, Revit and Oxford that do similar too now), and wondered if that's still a sensible thing to do?

Yes, definitely. Although I never quite got around to it ;)

Have a read around, some types do seem to be far better than others.

Depends on what armour is in it, some OE stuff comes with D3O etc already.

The level 2 armour in my Bull-it jeans feels pretty similar to the D3O stuff that I have so kept that in. I've sort of gone with the idea that armour is gonna help more with abrasion than impact so level 2 is level 2. Although I've read some are better than others, but how much that helps if you hit a lamppost or wall is probably best not thinking about

D3O is probably better an Hiprotec, but Hiprotec will be far better than anything foam/sponge based

I used the Forcefield stuff to replace the armour in a couple of jackets and my RST jeans. I found when it gets a bit of body heat into to it,then it adapts and is very comfy.

I've popped a set of the Halvarssons ones on my Christmas list based on that review link.

They seem to be what I want in terms of a good combo of CE2 and flexibility - I get a weird nerve thing in my elbows every now and again (no idea what it is, I've never looked into it), where they get sharp pains when pressed, so hopefully these will do the trick. :geek:

If they're suitably comfy I'll shell out and replace the rest too
