Mine was a Sinclair Spectrum 128k +2.

First one I remember was an IBM PC...literally just called "Personal Computer". My rents both worked at IBM since long before I was born.

There were computers at home since before I remember. Hence why I hate em

I often wonder what happened to those who went to uni to carry on with computer stuff in 1984. Did they earn a ton of cash or just sit in a dark office and still are ?

By the time I left school I think the really lucrative time had passed, I know a guy who is about 15yrs older than me and he was an IT nerd before IT nerds were really a thing and he talks about the days when he used to write his own cheques to set up systems for large companies that were going through a transformation from paper-based to computers.
He made a lot early on, then went into fibre when that became a thing and made a load more in that, haven't seen him for ages but he retired in his late forties I think, he had a big house and nice cars.

The people (that I know) from my school that went into IT have done ok as in they have normal jobs and earn around or just above average wages for their age group. Apart from two who were in the year above me and they got into telecoms and made a lot, they were involved with the Cordwells.

All the lads I know that are minted had their own building trade firms (or related stuff), sold up as they neared their fifties when they'd had enough and retired.

Maybe for another thread but those I know that made it are all trade related or manual work related. Would probably be a good thread for younger people to read if there was some here as they'd see you don't need a degree/career to earn good money.

Re: Being minted through IT....one of the other parents at Baby Ds school drops his kid off in a Lambo every day. He owns an IT firm, but not fixing printers and stuff. He has a PhD in physics and did a load of research on diamond semiconductors, the holy grail of that tech.

Anyway...he got so danged good at creating computer software to aid in his Physics research that he span it out into his own IT firm doing "stuff" which goes way over my head.

Old enough that I found myself idling browsing for pipes, pipe-tobacco and specialist pipe lighters last month..... (I used to smoke a pipe when I was a teenager, believe it or not. My dad smoked a pipe all day long). I haven't smoked more than once or twice (the odd cigar) for 20+ years...

Manual labour for me,I worked in the aircraft industry from 16 years old.

I was married before I ever owned a computer,it was an Acorn of some kind.

I really want a Dupont Ligne 2 despite having never smoked a day in my life. I also find myself watching YouTube vids from Davidoff of London sometimes

You can't do it in the office though. And the only reason to smoke a pipe is so that when someone asks you a question at work, you can lean back in your chair, take a few puffs, then give them the answer while jabbing the air with your pipe.

Oh me, oh my...a Sherlock Holmes vape pipe would be an absolute hoot! Not as good as the classic straight one for jabbing/point emphasis though.

(I always thought the main point of pipes was the ritual of cleaning, loading and lighting then, once lit, dropping them in your tweed jacket pocket then flapping at it when your pocket started to smoulder).

You don't need to smoke it, though. I have a pipe purely for pontificating reasons. If you sit in a pub or on a train on your own with a pipe in your mouth, people avoid you. In company it's a wonderful thing for making a point or looking intelligent, even when you're at the pint of no return.
