They probably shouldn't have allowed firms to pay immigrants less if they wanted to tackle that problem.
The 17 people they're gonna (fail to) send to Rwanda is a bad joke.

They made a promise and their plan to implement that promise was basically Rwanda. Anyone with half a brain could have told them it would never fly (pun intended), so one can only conclude they are comically incompetent.Potter wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 6:40 pm Ultimately it won't be the Tories that failed to try to make good on a promise to tackle immigration, it will be the opposition to it that successfully blocked it from happening. As well as prone to making dumb promises.

The Rwanda thing hasn't actually got much to do with 'immigration' y'know it's just to do with illegals. So quite how trying to 'tackle immigration' while focusing on 3% of it works, I do not know.Potter wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 6:40 pmThe voters voted the Conservatives into power based in part on their promise to do something about migrants, so now they're trying.DefTrap wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 5:45 pm I have to say I'm way more annoyed by the succession of pisstaking Home Secretaries who are desperate to make this awful Rwanda scheme happen. That's a far better example of terrible government decisions, foolish policy, wasting of money, inhumane and nasty politics. The funding of the Beeb has stayed across generations and all sorts of governments - trying to dress it up a symbolic of a drastic change in government controlling policy is bollocks.

I wasn't being exclusive in my comment. Politicians don't have a monopoly on making dumb promises, although they feature heavily in any ranking.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 7:18 pmYou're gonna have to focus in a bit on your criticisms if this is something you're levelling at politicians

Yeah, 'legal' migration is way bigger. But government would like us to focus on those nasty illegals 'invading' us...Count Steer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 7:32 pmThe Rwanda thing hasn't actually got much to do with 'immigration' y'know it's just to do with illegals. It's Capita.Rockburner wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 4:40 pmI "think" the TV licence is actually collected by another organisation, ie NOT the BBC themselves, the monies are then parcelled out to the BBC under the governance of some committee.Skub wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 2:35 pmLikewise. It expired, and we did not replace it (we had higher priorities and a limited budget).
It took an age to persuade the system we were not cheating, several visits to the house, and a detector van parked up nearby for a week.
So - it's not the BBC themselves that are chasing the fees.

I'm just using it as a counterpoint to the "BBC funding is an example of government control" when clearly BBC funding has been like this forever and there are far more unscrupulous right-now policies, controlling and inhumane policies voted in under the radar that we didn't really get to choose. You can't blame the opposition for opposing such nonsense and ultimately reversing it if / when they get in. I don't think this Rwanda solution is even that popular amongst the real "send them back" mob tbh.Potter wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 6:40 pm

Apologies for the Rwanda deviation by the way chaps, feel free to carry on slagging off the Marxist BBC and moaning about the 15 quid.

A political sacred cow which due to societal and demographic changes is no longer fit for the purpose.Potter wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 7:39 am I think it's a bad example of a politicised issue that is stuck in the mud because it's a politicised issue.
I dread to raise it but the NHS is another good example, I'm convinced that if politics was taken off the table entirely and some clever chaps sat around a table then it could be improved to the point of being unrecognisable and whilst perhaps it wouldn't be perfect (because nothing ever can be), it wouldn't be far off.
As such, it will have to die before being rebuilt as something relevant to current day needs. The obesity epidemic will probably finally kill it off (imo).

As far as I can remember, he doesn't even do the commentary, just the bits in between. So I agree, what he gets paid for that is a bit However, good luck to him. I'd do it for the money.Potter wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2023 4:11 pmSeriously? I can understand perhaps a chat show where the host is really good and puts a good show on, or a comedian doing a game show or something, but a bloke talking over a football match is just that.
I think you'll find a lot of agreement though. Particularly among the cohort that doesn't like what he says when he's not presenting football. I suspect some of them would welcome, say, Peter Shilton, getting paid the money for doing the same job though.
