CDs, tapes, vinyl, streaming, files...

Post by Slenver »

Prompted by a diversion on another thread, but also by a huge house clean out I'm in the process of...

How do you listen to music these days? And have you chucked away all your original vinyl, CDs, tapes?

I was a fairly big CD buyer for years and have about 700. Back in the early 2000s I ripped them all to my Mac and for years played them all from that, at one point through the (cruelly overlooked) AirPort Express multi-room system, and then various Sonos speakers. I still have a nice, expensive hi-fi, but have a Sonos box connected to it as the only source.

I do use the ripped files to stream, but mainly just stream from Deezer as it's a tad more up to date (!), plus I use the same for phone, car etc.

However... I still have massive boxes of the CDs I'm scared of getting rid of. But I feel the time must finally be up as I've not played from a CD for many, many years. Should I spend hours scanning in the barcodes to sell online for a few quid? Or just chuck them? Or keep them for the inevitable apocalypse?

Also, for no good reason, I really want to buy a nice record deck :)

CDs are all in boxes in the garage, no CD player in the house (PS4/5 won't play music CDs I discovered).

This year I bought a Sony deck and have been buying vinyl likes it's going out of fashion, usually from antique shops :)

In the car I usually listen to DAB radio, but I do have a USB with 10gb of random tunes I've collected over the years since MP3 was first a thing.

Sounds vaguely similar to me.

I have various friends and relatives that chucked all their vinyl back in when it was shit and are now either regretting it or buying them back for 15 quid a pop...

Will CDs ever have the same resurgence??

I don't have any streaming accounts and never have and still listen to most stuff on CD and Vinyl much to my wallets dismay.

I also listen to a lot of stuff on youtube via links on Discogs but that's it really. If i like something i want to physically own it not put even more reliance on an internet connection.

I hate it when i play something and the connection drops or an ad comes on, i need the escapism i get from music and need no interruptions from that escape.

I'd agree, though worth adding that I tend to have 20 or 30 current albums downloaded to my phone from my streaming app so I always have them for headphones/car without needing a signal. Plus I've never used an ad-supported tier.

An Echo Studio with Amazon Prime music subscription. All the music in the world for 8 quid a month.

It's very rare that it doesn't have some obscure track that I'm looking for.

"Computer! Play Bug's Parade by Jimmie Lunceford, then For Adolfs Only by the Valves"

Still got loads of vinyl and CDs, but hardly ever play them.

Deezer via the many Sonos speakers in Chez Gremlin.

Deezer in the car via Android Auto. Ditto on the bike, though through the MyTriumph app and Sena helmet set up.

I did offer to sell my vinyl collection to a bloke who buys and sells. After seeing it, he politely declined.

At home i the house is a Juice Boom* with a usb stick in it**. The shed has an mp3 player and dock, soon to be sold and replaced with another Juice Boom type thing. The van has a USB stuck into the infotainment system.

I don't listen to the radio and would happily shift on all the CDs, as I did with my vinyl. My hearing isn't good enough for the clutter to be justified.

The tunes are sourced from a variety of sources, and as with the best sources they must remain anonymous.

*I don't know the generic term.

**Currently playing the Japanese version of Pocket Calculator by Kraftwerk.

Spotify on the desktop/wireless speakers around the house/in the car/on the bike but...the kids think CDs are cool & retro (!) so I dug out some of my old Richer Sounds purchases.

It's quite nice having the hi-fi in the lounge & I sometimes stick a CD on in the evenings. Christ it makes me feel like a proper old fart.

CDs back in the day. Member of Brittania club with monthly orders. Then ripped most down for my iPod. Now i very rarely buy music. Normally watch youtube videos whilst wearing my airpods. With DAB in the vehicles, i can now select the music types I like and normally use the Heart "Eras", 70s, 80s, 90s and Xmas etc.

Still got vinyl and CDs, and the equipment to play them. Got rid of tapes when my last tape player started eating tapes.

Mostly play CDs, but vinyl gets an occasional outing.

I have just binned my CDs, tapes and VHS. My vinyl is in the loft as it's going up in value and I may sell it one day.

In the living room I listen to music on my laptop through speakers. In the kitchen I have some laptop speakers with a Bluetooth receiver and listen from my phone, same in the car - Bluetooth + phone.

I had a Spotify account for years but I have swapped that for YouTube Premium and also have Amazon Prime.

I'd check up on the condition of your vinyl. Lofts can get very hot in summer and can cause vinyl to warp. Direct sunlight is the worst, though.

Ideally it will only be up there for a couple of months. I had a read up on selling vinyl and it said to store them upright which they are. I will get them down, check and clean them and sell them as a lot. My brother has a friend who was in the trade so may give him a shout.

Tapes are makking a come back, i really don't know why but they are.

Lot's of artists are making mixtapes again and releasing on cassettes, personally i fucking hate tapes, they sound shit and skipping tracks is a challenge, but i'm 43 so what do i know about what is cool and what is not!

I stream Planet Rock on the long morning dog walk.
Then it's on at home/garage most of the day. Also play it on longer car/bike journeys.

And have Spotify for everything else. We both share 1 account.

About £13 a month for everything we want, ad free :)
