One thing perhaps to add is that cheap guitars have got a lot, lot better in recent years. Bit like cars and bikes, manufacturing costs have dropped and companies have combined, so most guitars are now made in 2 or 3 mega factories, meaning there's far less difference between the quality of different brands.

So while looking at 2nd hand guitars from the major brands is definitely worth doing, I'd be more cautious of doing the same with the budget brands. That's not to say those one you've linked to are bad (I have no idea about older HB stuff, or whether those are even old or not), but some of the entry-level guitars from 10+ years ago were pretty awful.

There's really no substitute for going to a big shop and having a play around though. It's tricky when starting from scratch without knowing what you like, but he's already competent on acoustic then he'll know what feels good to him. Go to Anderson's or somewhere similar for an hour or two and if nothing else then it would help narrow down the style of guitar he likes best. You won't be able to try things like Harley Bentons of course, but it might help point you in a specific direction.

Edit: Just read the surprise bit. Oh well :)

Andersons even 2nd hand would be shattering any ideas of budget.. their cheapest used is £230.

Well, they do new from £99..... they just don't have a massive 2nd hand range and it tends to be mid-range upwards.

Yeah i get the impression it's £30-40 for that...so that would potentially get done indeedy.

I have no particular interest in Anderton's, but they do claim to set up all guitars by hand, even their 99 quid ones. Worth bearing in mind in terms of looking at final cost.

I'd love to see the machine that accepts all different sizes/styles of guitar and does full setups.... ;) :D

He's actually really surprising me considering he'd not picked one up until 3 weeks ago and he can play parts of about 10 tunes he's going through and I can work out most from the tune.
I expect it takes many years to get good, but he's having fun and enjoying himself fir not a lot of money.

He's going to have to install a few microwave ovens and deliver a few custom kitchens to pay for it. :D

(I'm guessing the budget blossomed too  ).

If it's not fun,it's not anything. Having fun will make you better without even knowing other folk call it practice.

Would you believe we got the Pacifica and the Amp for £50?

The Jett was £110 but it'll fetch that all day

You don't understand the guitar thing yet. 'One will be sold'...and replaced with 2 more. It's exponential. Now, there are those that think the next guitar will make them a better guitarist, rather than more practice will and there are those that are pretty fine guitarists that, y'know, need another one but, the one thing they have in common is...numerous guitars. :D

I'd have been the same with pianos but they take up a lot of space. Oh, and saxophones, well because they're really nice...but I couldn't play for toffee. :(

I doubt you'll ever convince me that's there's an instrument cooler than the saxophone.
