The ESA on my GS doesn't go full height on when turned off, I'd have thought the XR used a similar system?

The Beemers when ignition is off goes full height and relatively solid. When you want to adjust sag you have to do it with the ignition on.

Well, hot dang. I never noticed on my K12 with ESA. I'm pretty sure it didn't go up in the air if I switched it off while I was sat on it though. Maybe I'm not suspension sensitive.

You’ll notice it sag when you turn the ignition on, that’s the reason the sag has to be set with it on, that’s how it’s to be done on the s1k’s at least as the electronic valves are only active when it’s on.

As an aside, nearly all bikes go 'full height' when you get off them (barring some static sag).
The beemer doesnt compress until you turn on the ignition, unlike normal suspension.

It all makes sense now. I'd get on my bike and turn the key/fire it up and iirc you'd hear the suspension whine and it would 'settle'. Getting off I'd switch off and get off and, obvs, the bike would rise as expected. Up there I thought it was suggesting if you sat on it and turned it off it would rise.

You'd also feel it working if you changed settings.

Just checked mine. Pushed out of garage, ignition still off and it's at my normal riding height. Turn ignition on, no change. Didn't start engine though.

5' 6" She's an ex traffic cop though, and will happily whizz around on bikes that she can't touch the ground on without slipping off the seat, like her KTM 640 motard. And no, I don't try to keep up with her

Just checked mine. Pushed out of garage, ignition still off and it's at my normal riding height. Turn ignition on, no change. Didn't start engine though.

On the s1000rr the valves become active when the ignition is on, so if you sit on it with the ignition off and then put it on you feel it sag slightly.

The only bike I've ever owned that I can put both feet flat is the Monster!! I've been lucky to get tiptoes on both feet down on all the others, some it was just tiptoes of one foot


Some stroppy bloke (apparently a bike instructor) at a Blackbird rally was having a go at me when I said I couldn't get both my feet flat on the TLs (I know, but I used to have a BB!!) - pretty much everyone else around the fire took a few steps back over the next few minutes of conversation!

Especially when he boasted that he'd told a woman who turned up for bike training on a bike that she couldn't get both feet flat to go away and buy a bike that 'fitted' her!!

Given that so many of the guys on the campsite that weekend were short and were riding Blackbirds, this guy was seriously on a losing conversation! And being that he was was very opinionated and somewhat chauvinist, I didn't react that well to him Did cause a lot of amusement to the others tho!!

It really doesn't matter as long as you know which foot you're going to put down and plan accordingly. People seem to get into a sweat about it. I suspect it's as much about bike control as anything. The chap that ran the Yamaha Off-Road days (Barry) was 'not tall' but the bikes were. It didn't bother him. I couldn't get both feet down on them...it didn't bother me either.

I'm 6'3" with a 34" inside leg. I'm fine with most stuff.

When I put my GS on 'Two Helmets & Luggage' for the preload and then the firmest mode, I can just get both balls of my feet to the ground (I have the seat on the highest setting too).

It must be horrible being a smidget... I often say to my 5'3" wife.
