Ecu remap and pipes
Wonder what the implications of this are for lots of remapping firms. Guess you'd have to be unlucky to be taken to court though. Taken to court for CAT delete and remap for more noise

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
I had a fully built STI years ago that had a pop and bang setting that had been mapped in, it was the most annoying thing ever so it never got used, it’s rife here, all the chavs with their Fiesta and Focus ST’s popping and banging like buggery.

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
Doesn't stop half the people on here doing a remap after fitting an exhaust. Some even whip out that cat. Frankly I'm amazed there haven't been more prosecutions!MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 4:42 pm Tampering with the emissions system of a vehicle has been illegal for yonks.
Scorpion are a manufacturer who create a load of exhausts for road models with a little 'not homologated' disclaimer. I wonder when they'll get a knock on the door?

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
Guilty as charged - my Duke 690 had its cat removed in the first 6 months of its life and has successfully passed through 3 MoTs since then, with not even an advisory. It also had a full remap at BSD. It's much better than before...The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 10:38 pmDoesn't stop half the people on here doing a remap after fitting an exhaust. Re: Ecu remap and pipes
For individuals, such as myself, I imagine being able to prove it's been tampered with is overly onerous, predominantly because there need to be a damn sturdy suspicion to seize my vehicle and cut up the down pipes to see if the cats are still there (they are btw, but you'd not know with cutting them up or scoping them). The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 10:38 pmDoesn't stop half the people on here doing a remap after fitting an exhaust. That this is the first case speak volumes, and obviously a whole hell of a lot easier if the company were publicly advertising cat deletes, I don't doubt that this will open the floodgates, or see a lot of tuning companies going under or underground.

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
Only a matter of time for bikes perhaps?
It's way harder to pass MOT (legitimately ) with a modified car because they actually measure the emissions. I.e. on paper at least you can't pass without all the stuff in place and working.
That said, AMG Mercs pop and bang like fuck, straight from the showroom!
I was gonna say "surely", but perhaps the introduction of EV bikes will be before the introduction of mandatory emissions checks.

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
I had my bike re mapped to get rid of the pops and bangs!
I dont know if it's me getting old, but it seems that cars are getting louder and bikes quieter.
Except here, where the CT is a bit strict re mods ie none.

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
Same here, although my Guzzi wasn't standard beforehand, also had dB killers permanently welded into the race pipes at the same time as getting it mapped - so much nicer to ride for it.I had my bike re mapped to get rid of the pops and bangs!

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
The standard silencer on my Honda is louder at high rpm than the race can I put on because I didn't like the looks. If I put the dB killer in the race can it's quieter at all rpm, I'd like to get rid of the cat because it's ugly, but I doubt if I'll bother.

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
Same here, my GS has a Gemi chip and a cat delete and it walks the MOT every year. It's not even that loud unless you're really giving it some, at tickover the engine is noiser than the exhaust.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 10:50 pmGuilty as charged - my Duke 690 had its cat removed in the first 6 months of its life and has successfully passed through 3 MoTs since then, with not even an advisory. My K12 is standard, complete with the enormous silencer with the cat and it will occasionally pop and bang..
I used to work in a remap/tuning place and it was on the receipt that all modification was done on the basis of "Not for road use competition only" There's no diesel emission test in NI so half the remaps in the country are so it spews black smoke like a car ferry and they don't test for noise so a lot of diesels are straight piped.

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
If the cat on the Duke 690 had been less visually offensive and hadn't interfered massively whenever I do an oil change (which is quite often), then I might have let it be. But it looks hideous and in order to clean up properly after an oil change it has to be removed every time, which quickly gets old. I've still got it, stashed away somewhere at the back of the shed, so I could re-fit it just for the MoT if needs be but hopefully that won't be required.
Here's the kind of crap left behind after an oil change:
And a comparison between cat and delete pipe:
And the bike with the delete pipe fitted:
The defence rests its case.

Re: Ecu remap and pipes
On my GSXR1000 K9 (2009) it came new with twin Arrow exhausts and the cat in a box.
Suzuki sold me it so was fine by me.

I used to do this in my 20's and 30's, but now I'm in my 50's I've learnt that it's obnoxious, women don't drop their knickers at a loud exhaust, and I much prefer the stealthy side of things.
