I'd 'reseat' the drive first.

If it's a desktop, pop the side off and unplug the SATA and Power cables from the drive, then reconnect them and power it on.

I had a brainwave and decided to get my mate who runs an IT support company to take a look, He's picking it up in 10 mins......

Fingers crossed its the connections that are doing it...

Ah, there's sometimes a small panel you can remove to get at the drive, but if you've got a fella can do it that's probably best.

So my mate happened to have a spare 1TB drive "hanging around" and has swapped the fubarred one out for me, delivered it back, and all for free

I've got the fucked hard drive which wasn't playing at all, couldn't get anything off it.

Not sure I need to worry too much, I'd just finished the companies annual accounts so thats all on file with the accountant and apart from some pics, I can retrieve most stuff from either One Drive, Photobox or social media platforms so not the complete disaster I thought it might be.

One question, I usually use Chrome as my default browser but I've heard the latest version of Edge is pretty good now. What say you?

'New' Edge is my go to browser.

Chrome and Edge are now both based on the open source Chromium engine, so they're quite similar, but I'm finding Edge just a teeny bit quicker and it doesn't eat memory like Chrome does.

Thanks Bob, ISTR it may have been you who had mentioned it before. I'll stay with it.

Try running a Live Linux distro from a CD or USB, and plugging your dead drive into an external enclosure. I've had some luck that way retrieving data from a drive that Windows wouldn't recognise.
