We're still not sure if it was DWP. Orange sent out large amounts of mobile data (ok, increased everyones limit!!) to cover the outage. But the text on my phone to tell me came through about two hours after our systems started working - my home one was working when I got back!! LOL

Was a bizarre few hours in the office but at least I now know I can get all the systems I need on my laptop!

Did they actually get caught out? I'd have found it hard to avoid saying 'I told you so'...

I had a home UPS which meant that the PC and printer were running on battery in normal use, so if the power went off, it didn't bother the set up at all, until the battery went flat. It gave time to save any work and shut stuff down in a controlled fashion.

Are big data centre things different? If I sliced through the power supply would the switch to battery be that instantaneous?

I know that our data centre people on one job cacked their pants when they were told to resilience test it in case the power supply went (it failed) and another (later job) disaster planning op had our servers operating from a back up mobile platform....seems a bit daft to have the main data centre under one of the main approaches to Heathrow though and they had to plan for a 747 through the roof.

I can only speak for Bank data centres, but yes, the UPS Battery bank is mahoosive and cuts in as soon as loss of mains power is detected. There's lots of fancy smoothing electronics to make the cutover seamless and normally the backup generator(s) are fully active within a couple of minutes. There will also be a 'hot standby' datacentre ready to take over the workload of the main d/c if a jumbo jet lands on it. The hot standby datacentre will be located within a certain distance of the main d/c (ISTR 50 miles was the maximum distance) so that the two data centres can be connected by ultra high speed, ultra high bandwidth data network links. I've been out of the game for over 3 years now, so new tech that obsoletes the stuff I knew about could very well be in place.

Not as far as I know. But in carrier telephony, where the standard reliability was '5 9s' it wasn't a good idea.

Railway definition of a UPS: something that sits in a corner or room to itself, quietly being ignored and bound to fail when you most need it because the spineless management ignore the techs that want to test it regularly with a proper mains failure test. No they're just happy that the alarm circuitry is tested if anything.
