I kind of thought that putting a little effort in to lessen the risk of spreading viruses just came with the territory of not being a dick

Yeahbutt,that's kinda like common sense,ie not common.

I see a few people wearing them here - generally when they have a cold or think they have a virus. Ok, most have been medical people who I've gone to see, but there have been some others (not recently as I've not been off the mountain for a few weeks!)

Personally, I do think that it's kind of cool that if someone has a cold or virus they are willing to wear a mask to try and reduce the chance of sharing whatever they have!!

I wouldn't argue (or even suggest) that wearers of masks are dicks, but it wasn't so long ago that we had people hounded in the streets by hysterical people for not wearing masks, whilst the jury is still out on whether they're actually effective or not.

So as with most things, a bit of common sense and compassion is warranted, I personally witnessed a panic attack from a colleague when we were forced to wear a mask inside and he felt like he was suffocating, his Fitbit showed his heart rate went from 60-something to 170-something whilst he was sat right next to me in a meeting. I had to physically help him outside so he could remove the mask.

As to "the jury is still out on whether they're [masks] actually effective or not", there is a large body of objective scientific investigation into the efficacy of different types of masks in filtering the inhalation and exhalation of viruses, much publicised during the Covid pandemic. Google is your friend.

I think the evidence of the efficacy of mask usage is spurious and dependant on so many additional factors, not worth going into again in depth. The main reason for not wearing one, let's be honest, is "I don't want to wear one". The better solution is to quarantine the contagious, but how do you enforce that ? And it's not really sustainable anyway given the longevity of remaining contagious.

I didn't get COVID til long after it dominated the evening news and I definitely got it from some selfish bastard on a plane who knew they had it but decided to crack on anyway.

Good on 'em I say, can't see the point in catching something that might kill you and if a mask might help, fine. I certainly wouldn't not wear one if I had an immunity problem just because it might make some ****it thinks I'm 'speshal' or thinks Covid is some sort of hoax. Heck, if surgeons continue to wear them, despite the questions raised by the Covid deniers, I don't have a problem with folk wearing something that covers their orifices.

Physical science only deals in "I think" and "IMHO" when there is inconclusive evidence. When something is proven beyond doubt it becomes scientific fact.
